Ringnews24 - Vbulletin/Joomla optimisation

ringnews24

New member
Hi guys, I was referred to the site by Max Taxable. My names is James and I am from Scotland, UK - I own a vbulletin forum and a very very slow Joomla website.

I am hoping you guys will be able to guide me in making my Joomla and vbulletin site run a lot faster.

Sorry If I am posting in the wrong section.

Forum - Boxing Forum

News Site - World Boxing News (update to Joomla 3.2 should be finished tomorrow. Front page does look a little messy with some missing photos etc...)

I would like to work on getting my joomla site faster before moving onto my forum, any advice you guys could offer would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

First off let's lighten the load some on the joomla. The following images need to be optimized and made progressive:
HTML:

The WebPageTest site actually does this work for you, you need only to find the optimized images they provide, download them to your computer, rename them to match what is on your server, and upload to overwrite.

Your Image Breakdown.

At the link above, look for every image it shows where it says, "Not Progressive - Analyze JPEG" and click the link provided.

The result will be a page with three images to choose from - pick the one that has the lowest KB size and use that.

Do this for each and every one you see that has the "Not Progressive - Analyze JPEG" notation.

You're saving over 300kb here, just by doing this. Do the easy things first.

How would that work if I am posting new articles every day?

I fixed 6 images that don't move from the front page.

Before:

T -14.229s
R - 262
BI - 2,013 KB

After:

T - 10.779s
R - 177
BI - 1,839 KB

P.S How did you you get to view the image link you posted? What options did you select?

When the test completes, click on the waterfall image. Under that is a link, "View all images."

Post the image, run the test, get the optimized image from WPT, upload it. Only takes a couple of extra minutes.

Can you run a image through a website to get it optimized before uploading to the article?

Not that I'm aware of as yet. Also unknown if the resulting image would pass the WPT standard either. You would wind up having to test it, to find out in any event. Adding steps.

Once my site has been fully updated, Which I am hoping will be tonight. I will test a few websites to see if they pass the WPT standard and let you know how I get on Max. I will also sort all the images on the front page once it has been update.

Now that I have learned how to Optimise images, whats next Max?

Why waste time with the bolded, when you know already WPT does the optimization for you? It's not that difficult to run the image through the WPT test, get the optimized image, then upload it.

Reducing unnecessary third party requests.

If I can upload straight to the article rather than FTPing each image that would save some time.

I didn't know you could put a image url into search.

I just did it there - thanks Max.

Is there a guide on how to Reduce unnecessary third party requests. (sorry i'm a newbie)

My main rule of thumb on 3rd party requests: If it doesn't generate revenue there's no compelling reason to have it. Audit your 3rd party requests with this in mind, do I really, really need it.

Thanks for the reply Max.

Yardbarker generates revenue but only per USA hits and since adding it our own Google Adsence has dropped lots.

They do send us extra hits but its not a lot, removing it would get rid of the top menu, 2 advert spaces and the front page widget.

I am in contract with them until September 2015. I will ask them again to let us rip up the contract as it slows the site down and the revenue has been very poor.

I have a third party MGID wiget at the bottom of articles. - not sure if it makes much of a difference, I know alot of news websites use it as for every 2 hits they send you 1 back. Not sure whether to keep or remove.

I think thats all the third partys on my website.

Look at your waterfall in detail here. Waterfall

Here you can see all the calls and all which aren't from you. There are MANY third party calls. 3rd party represents more than half of your total calls. You can click on each one and get detail on how fast it loaded, how many kb it represents, everything.

First thing you notice there? Yardbarker isn't slowing you down at all. Every call loaded from there, loads fast. Whoever told you it is slowing you down is full of shit as a Thanksgiving turkey.

K m8, thanks.

I might even just disable Yard Barker for a few days just to see if it helps increase my own google ads again. Yard Barker uses Double Clicks ads. Then make a decision whether to keep it or not.

I will have a good look just now at the waterfall.

Edit: What am I looking for on the waterfall? Anything that doesn't start with ringnews24.com ????

Yup.

And, google bought doubleclick for something like $3 billion. Doubleclick IS google.

We have a press release section on our news site and we use the same promoters image for every article within the categorie. If I optimise says todays 'Matchroom image' will I then have to optimise tomorrows press release with the same image? Or should the change stay the same?

If it is the same image file it will have the same properties.

Today I have optimised a lot of photos on several pages on the Joomla site.

I also got rid of some plugins that were showing up and I am in middle of removing the YB ads and widgets.

Whats next Max?
