SALADO, Texas — Interstate 35 here was shut down in both directions Thursday after a bridge collapse that has killed at least one person and injured three others, according to Texas Department of Public Safety officials.
The collapse occurred about 11:30 a.m. CT near exit 286 north of Salado, about 40 miles north of Austin, according to Becky Ozuna, Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
A semi-trailer driving on I-35 dislodged several beams on an overpass that is under construction, which fell on several cars on the interstate, she said.
The truck, which appeared to be too tall for the overpass, came to a stop under the bridge with its cab heavily damaged.
"It looked wedged underneath the bridge," said Corbin Casteel, who was traveling from Austin to Dallas for business when he came upon the accident.

A person in a pickup truck who was driving under the bridge at the time of the collapse died, Ozuna said. The victim was not identified pending notification of family.
Three people were transported to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries, said Lt. Donnie Adams of the Bell County Sheriff's Office. Another pickup truck and at least three semi-trailers were damaged in the incident.
"We've got more vehicles than we've got space for," said Adams, noting that the area is undergoing heavy construction. The stretch of roadway is being expanded to three lanes in both directions and includes new overpasses, exits and other work.
It was not immediately known how long the major route between Austin and Waco would be closed, said Trooper D.L. Wilson, public safety department spokesman.
By about an hour after the accident, southbound traffic was backed up about 15 miles to Temple, Texas.
