HOUSTON*— Two students were killed,*two other students and a bus driver were*seriously injured when a school bus fell off a Houston overpass and landed on its side on the access road below, firefighters said Tuesday.
The Houston Independent School District said the bus had four students onboard. Two female students died as a result of*the incident*— one at the scene and one at the hospital. The two other students and the bus driver were taken to the hospital, the district said in a news release on its blog.
Investigators with the Houston Police Department said a late-model Buick LeSabre on the left-hand side of the bus thought that a car was going to drift into its*lane. The Buick then shifted into the school bus to avoid the other vehicle.
At that time, the school bus driver tried to avoid the Buick and over-corrected, falling off the overpass and onto the access road below.
Witnesses said the bus nose-dived and then fell onto its side along the freeway embankment.
The school district said the bus was on its way to Furr High School when the wreck occurred on the Interstate 610 South Loop.
Furr High School also is the home to REACH Charter High School. It is unclear which school the students attended.
The school district said the bus driver, who has a clean driving record,*has been with the district for about three years. Records show the bus had an inspection in June, the district said.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” said Terry Grier, superintendent of the Houston Independent School District. “I ask all of the (school district)*community to join me in praying for all of those involved.”
Houston operates the largest public school district in Texas with about 215,000 students.
