Four people were killed and 14 others injured Sunday afternoon when a van caught fire in a crash with a pickup in a suburb of Washington, D.C., authorities said.
Officials told WUSA-TV that one child and three adults were among the victims.
Of the 14 injured, six were*children and eight were adults, Prince George's County Fire Department Spokesman Mark Brady said.*He told The Associated Press*that eight of those transported to an area hospital*were in critical condition, including four children.
The accident took place late Sunday afternoon in Hyattsville, Md., just northeast of the nation's capital, fire officials said.
Brady said authorities believe a pickup first collided with another vehicle, then continued forward with a tire on fire when it hit the passenger van, which was big enough to hold 15.
Brady said most of the injuries and fatalities were concentrated in the van, AP reported. He said it was one of the worst scenes he had seen in a 40-year career.
A witness told WTTG-TV that she heard the crash from her home and ran out to find "just regular people running in and pulling people out of the van." She said she saw bystanders remove at least four children from the van.
