Public employee unions face major Supreme Court hurdle
The Supreme Court kicks off the new year Monday seemingly poised to deal a major blow to the nation's public employee unions by wiping out, or at least weakening, a legal precedent that dates back nearly four decades. If the justices' recent rulings against organized labor are any guide, a deeply divided court is likely to make it harder for unions representing teachers, police and firefighters, and other government workers to collect fees from non-members. The case represents the biggest legal threat to labor unions in decades.

Trial begins for 2nd officer in Freddie Gray case
Caesar Goodson, the officer who was behind the wheel during the van ride that proved fatal for Freddie Gray, goes on trial Monday.*Goodson is the only one of six officers charged in Gray’s death who did not speak to investigators.*He faces the most serious charge of all — second-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.*Last month, Officer William Porter’s trial ended with a hung jury, making the stakes for Goodson’s trial even higher in a city still on edge from the rioting and unrest in April that followed Gray’s death.

Alabama plays Clemson for the College Football Playoff title
Monday night's championship game marks the final game of 2015 college football season, and the stakes couldn't be higher. With a win, Clemson would become the first team in major-college history to go 15-0. It would also be Clemson's first national title in 34 years. Alabama (13-1) is angling for its fourth national championship trophy since 2009. *Saban’s powerhouse is led by the nation’s stingiest defense and Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry. The Tigers will counter with quarterback Deshaun Watson, who finished third for the Heisman. The game airs at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
