1. Happy Birthday, Magna Carta
Magna Carta, which turns 800 years old on Monday, established the principle that no man was above the law — not even the king. The charter is revered as a cornerstone of democracy, with famous principles such as the right to justice and a fair trial stemming from its inception. With only four of the original copies from 1215 left, the document is priceless — well, almost. In 2007, a somewhat younger copy from 1297 sold for $21.3 million at auction. In 1941, as World War II raged in Europe, the Magna Carta was also a potential bargaining chip. Britain hoped that offering Magna Carta to the United States would encourage the reluctant country to join the war, or at least continue supporting the British war effort. Though the proposal to gift the document to the U.S. eventually failed, the offer "shows that Magna Carta certainly isn't just about Britain but is an important part of the American history as well," said Jessica Nelson, medieval records specialist at The National Archives in the United Kingdom.

2. Jeb Bush to announce he's running for president
Jeb Bush will announce his 2016 presidential campaign plans at an event in South Florida on Monday. Bush previewed his campaign announcement Sunday with a web video casting himself as a problem solver during his two terms as Florida governor. "What we need is new leadership that takes conservative principles and applies them so that people can rise up," Bush says in the video. "America's best days are in front of us, and we are going to lead the world." The former Florida governor and the son and brother of U.S. presidents, Bush faces an historically crowded field of more than a dozen Republican opponents.
3. Prison employee who allegedly helped killers escape due in court
As police continue their search for Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 35, who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility earlier this month, prison employee Joyce Mitchell, 51, faces a court appearance Monday on charges she aided the escape. Mitchell is accused of "providing material assistance" to the men, who authorities say used power tools to cut their way out of the maximum security prison in Dannemora, N.Y.

4. Supreme Court races the clock

The future of same-sex marriage and President Obama's health care law hang in the balance as the Supreme Court's 2014 term draws rapidly to a close this month. The next decisions will come Monday morning. Other big issues on the justices' plate: free speech and fair elections, religious liberty and racial discrimination, and clean air and capital punishment. All await rulings over the next three weeks as the court completes action on 20 cases remaining this term. Here's a look at the Elite Eight.

5. Feds to auction polygamist leader's Cadillac

The vehicle polygamous church leader Warren Jeffs was using to flee authorities when he was caught and arrested in 2006 will be auctioned off Monday, along with the credit cards, gift cards and other items found inside. The auction is part of an ongoing effort to satisfy a lawsuit judgment in favor of a former bodyguard for Jeffs. William "Willie" Jessop won a lawsuit against Jeffs and the FLDS in 2012 by default after leaders failed to appear in court to defend themselves against claims they destroyed Jessop's business, took property and harassed his family. Jeffs is serving a life prison sentence in Texas after being convicted in 2011 of sexually assaulting the young girls he had taken as wives. It is believed he continues to maintain control of his followers through communications made from prison.
