1. Pope's encyclical on climate change to be released
Pope Francis issues his long-awaited "encyclical" on climate change and the environment Thursday. (What the heck is an encyclical? More here.) A draft of the document was leaked this week. The conversation about the encyclical highlights a rift in the Catholic Church between those who share Francis' view that people should be the guardian of nature and those who think the risks of climate change are exaggerated. The encyclical is called "Laudato Sii" — translated from Latin as "Praised Be," a reference to a prayer from the pope's namesake, St. Francis, viewed by Catholics as the patron saint of ecology. The teaching letter will promote climate action as a moral imperative.

2. Manhunt for shooter who left 9 dead in S.C. church continues
Police are searching for a man who shot and killed at least nine people during a prayer meeting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., Wednesday night. Among the dead was a state senator who was also pastor of the church, Clementa Pinckney. The suspect is a clean-shaven white male about 21 years old with sandy blond hair, officials said. Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen described the shooting as a hate crime and said, "we are going to do everything in our power to find this individual, to lock him up, and to make sure that he does not hurt anyone else."
3. Treasury to put a woman on the $10 bill
A woman will appear on the $10 bill beginning in 2020, the Treasury Department said Wednesday. Just which woman is up to you. Legally, the decision belongs to Jack Lew, but the Treasury secretary said he's seeking public input on which female historical figure should appear on U.S. paper currency for the first time in 119 years. "We're going to spend a lot of time this summer listening to people," Lew said. A decision could come this fall. Share your take on who should appear on the new bill.
4. New '50 Shades' book is out
It was the biggest publishing surprise of the summer. 50 Shades of Grey author E.L. James announced she would tell the sexy S&M saga from billionaire Christian Grey's point of view. Now, erotica fans can stop their anticipatory panting. Grey, the fourth book in the bondage-and-discipline series, was released digitally at midnight. There's little doubt it'll be a hit: More than 125 million copies of the trilogy have sold and the film version starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson earned $569.7 million worldwide.

5. 15-year-old becomes youngest player at the U.S. Open
Cole Hammer is 15, but he looks about 10. Tipping the scales at 125 pounds dripping wet, Hammer on Thursday will become the third youngest player to ever tee it up in the U.S. Open. This month, he became the third youngest qualifier in history with rounds of 64-68 at Northwood Club in Dallas. This past weekend he played practice rounds at Chambers Bay with Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker. On Monday, he hit range balls next to Rory McIlroy and played nine holes with fellow Texas golf wonder Jordan Spieth, his favorite golfer. Needless to say, he's having a ball.
