1. House votes on a new speaker
The GOP wants Paul Ryan to be the next Speaker of the House, but the congressman from Wisconsin must be elected by the full House on Thursday to make it official. Republicans hope Ryan can do what retiring Speaker John Boehner couldn't: unite the fractious Republican conference. Ryan is hopeful. Only with the support of the three major Republican factions would he agree to run for the position.

2. Three years later, success of*Superstorm Sandy recovery debated*
Superstorm Sandy ravaged the Northeast three ago, destroying homes and robbing families of all their possessions in the floods that followed. In its wake, the federal government approved a $50.5 billion aid package to help the people impacted by the storm, and according to Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate, those recovery efforts are three years ahead of schedule. Fugate also believes the government was able to avoid many of the mistakes committed after Hurricane Katrina. Not everyone would agree that the recovery has been a success, however, as many victims*remain unable to return to their homes*and*say red tape has prevented them from getting the assistance they were promised.

3.'Dr. Phil' to air tapes of Jared Fogle talking about child sex
Dr. Phil will air recorded phone conversations from former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle during a two-part show beginning Thursday. A Florida woman who complained to Subway about Fogle in 2011*claims to have secretly taped him discussing sexual encounters with children, a release from the talk show program said. Fogle —*who became famous for losing weight by eating Subway sandwiches*—*plead guilty to child pornography charges and having sex with minors and will be sentenced in November.
4. Man convicted in prep school sex assault to be sentenced
It could be the final chapter in the "Senior Salute" case. The Vermont man convicted of sexually assaulting a younger student at an elite prep school faces up to 11 years in prison when he is sentenced Thursday.*A jury in August acquitted*Owen Labrie of rape but convicted him*of three counts of misdemeanor sexual assault*as well as a felony charge of using a computer to lure a minor.* The case generated national attention when it was revealed that Labrie was engaging in a "Senior Salute," a tradition at St. Paul's*School in New Hampshire in which graduating seniors attempt to have sex with underclassmen. Labrie's lawyer has argued that Labrie, now 20, has been punished enough and deserves probation.

5. New phone with shatterproof screen now for sale
How does a new smartphone stand out in a sea of smartphones? Shatterproof screen. Two-day battery life. At least, Motorola and Verizon hope that will do the trick. The carriers start selling the Droid Turbo 2 Thursday ($624 for a 32GB model without a contract). The phone features a 5.4-inch QHD display that Motorola and Verizon claim will be able to withstand drops, slips and tumbles, even those taken on concrete. If it does shatter within the first year,*they will replace the phone one time for free.*The Droid Maxx 2 is also on sale Thursday. It boasts the same impressive battery life, but not the shatterproof screen ($384 off-contract).
