1. CES 2015 officially begins
Geekdom is celebrated with impressive technology and gadget debuts at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. From 4K TV to drones and face recognition to wearables, the biggest names in tech (LG, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic) will hand over their shiny, new products to the public (and lots of tech journalists) to give them a whirl. USA TODAY will be there all week. Follow @JeffersonGraham, @EdBaig, @MikeSnider, @MarcoDellaCava and Jon Swartz (@jswartz) for live updates.
2. Major League Baseball selects new Hall of Fame class
There are 34 players on this year's Hall of Fame ballot. Who seems to be a shoo-in? Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson. Martinez, one of the preeminent pitchers of his time (1997-2003), carried himself with a swagger that belied his size. In his early years, Martinez established his credentials as an elite pitcher with the Montreal Expos. But it was with the Boston Red Sox that he became a legend. On the west coast, there wasn't a more feared pitcher in the majors during his heyday (from 1993-2002) than Randy Johnson, the Big Unit, who came after batters with a nasty disposition, throwing howling fastballs from a 6-10 frame with a three-quarters-to-sidearm motion.
3. Boehner poised to fend off revolt, win 3rd term as speaker
Although an effort to deny John Boehner a third term as Speaker of the House gained traction in recent days as a total of nine GOP lawmakers announced their intentions to vote against him, the brewing rebellion is unlikely to succeed. At least 29 Republicans would have to vote against Boehner to strip him of the gavel, forcing a second ballot. Even if Boehner wins a comfortable majority, however, the public rebellion will serve as a high-profile reminder of the opposition he faces within his own Republican ranks as the 114th Congress gets underway.

4. 1759 time capsule contents revealed
The contents of a time capsule sealed by Paul Revere and Samuel Adams around 1795 will be revealed Tuesday by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The time capsule was extracted on Dec. 11 from the cornerstone of the Massachusetts statehouse in Boston. The box weighs 10 pounds and is about the size of a cigar box. It is possibly the oldest such U.S. artifact ever uncovered.

5. Former Virginia governor faces prison, most likely in form of a camp
Former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell could face 10 years or more in federal prison when he's sentenced Tuesday for his public corruption convictions. He will likely be sent to a minimum-security prison (similar to Martha Stewart's experience) where there are fewer guards and more freedom for inmates, says consultant Justin Paperny. McDonnell was found guilty Sept. 4. on 11 of 13 federal charges filed against him, trading access to the power of the governor's office for more than $165,000 in loans and high-end gifts.
