1. Republicans push to defund Planned Parenthood
Watch out, Planned Parenthood — Republicans are*trying a new way to defund the nation's largest abortion provider*while avoiding a government shutdown. On Tuesday, two committees will take up bills that would pave the way for Congress to pass legislation that would essentially strip federal funds from the organization. It is clear that Congress will vote this week to keep the government open without addressing the issue; President Obama has vowed to veto any legislation to defund Planned Parenthood. Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, is expected to testify before Congress regarding the non-profit's use of taxpayers' funds, amid allegations that the organization had discussed selling tissue and organs from aborted fetuses for profit.

2. Tesla unveils Model X
Elon Musk on Tuesday will debut the Model X, Tesla's new electric crossover. The unveiling will take place at the*company's Fremont, Calif., factory. This month, Musk*tried to dispel rumors*that the Model X would be overly pricey, tweeting that the new crossover had "greater size and body complexity." Reports currently put the vehicle at $132,000.

3. Georgia woman on death row to be executed
Georgia's only woman on death row is set to be executed Tuesday. Kelly Renee Gissendaner was sentenced to death in 1998 after she was convicted of recruiting her boyfriend, Gregory Owen, to kill her husband, Doug. While the victim's family supports the execution, Gissendaner's attorneys and lawyers continue to appeal for clemency. The state parole board is holding a meeting just eight hours prior to her scheduled execution to consider a request for clemency.*The former state corrections deputy director and former chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court have also joined in on the effort to spare her from death row. Gissendaner's execution was already postponed from March when officials cited problems with the drug that would be used for the lethal injection.

4. President Obama to meet with Cuban President*Raúl Castro*
While in New York for the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, President Obama will have his second face-to-face meeting with Raúl Castro since the U.S. and Cuba restored diplomatic relations in late 2014. Obama met the communist leader in April on the sidelines of a Summit of the Americas meeting in Panama. This is Castro's first trip to the annual opening of the U.N. General Assembly.

5. It's John Roberts' 10 year anniversary as Chief Justice
Tuesday marks 10 years since John Roberts became the head of the Supreme Court of the United States. And what a decade it has been, with the high court's*landmark decisions ranging from corporate campaign contributions to gay marriage. Back in 2005, Roberts said that the role of the judge was "limited" — but the Roberts Court hasn't been as modest as he would have liked. Justices have swung right and left in rulings that affect all aspects of American life, placing the court*at the fulcrum of American public policy, culture — and politics.
