Mets-Royals World Series gets underway
Two teams looking for their first championship in 30 years square off*Tuesday as the Kansas City Royals host the New York Mets in Game 1 of the World Series. The Mets last won in 1986, defeating Boston in a series that featured the Mets' miraculous/infamous comeback in Game 6 following*a booted ball by Bill Buckner. The Royals, who lost just last year in seven games to*the Giants, were last winners against the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals in the 1985 "I-70 Showdown" series. Matt Harvey (13-8, 2.71 ERA) starts Game 1 for the Mets.. The Fall Classic (Fox, 8:07 p.m. ET)*begins at*Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium, before moving to New York's Citi Field.

Obama to call for*tougher gun laws at top cop conference
President Obama will be in Chicago on Tuesday*where he is expected to address the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference about the need for tougher gun laws and how police can work more effectively with their communities to combat violence. Leaders of nine national law enforcement groups at the conference have called on federal lawmakers to expand background checks on gun purchases to include private sales and gun*shows. They also want*to strengthen the*National Instant Criminal Background Check System*(NICS) to prevent ineligible buyers from obtaining a firearm and to increase the time the FBI has to complete a background check. Another challenge facing law enforcement is the massive backlog of gun sale records at the ATF's National Tracing Center.
Children pay heavy toll for high rate of incarceration in America
Growing up with parents behind bars can be devastating for children, causing mental and physical health problems including low self esteem that can haunt them the rest of their lives. And one in 14 kids is likely to have had at least one incarcerated parent, according to a study released Tuesday by Child Trends. The number jumps to one in nine for black children, and poor kids are three times as likely to have a parent who has been locked up. Child Trends hopes the findings will prod prisons, schools and lawmakers to make changes that will help young people with incarcerated parents.

NBA season is on
Can the Golden State Warriors dominate again? Just how good are the Cleveland Cavaliers? These are two of the many questions we have going into the NBA season, which opens Tuesday with three games.
