World's elite converge in Switzerland*for World Economic Forum
More than 2,500 top business and political leaders descend on the picturesque Swiss ski town of Davos on Thursday as the annual World Economic Forum gets underway. This year's meeting takes place amid huge uncertainty: the rise of the Islamic State, global markets in crisis*and an oil market in freefall. The conference typically serves up a smorgasboard of dealmaking and confabbing among the elite,*but this year, there's a gloomy refrain, says USA TODAY's editor-in-chief David Callaway: At least it's not 2008.

Pre-dawn planetary skyshow gets underway
Starting Wednesday and for the next few weeks, early-morning skywatchers will get a special treat as five of the solar system's other eight planets will all be visible at once with the naked eye. Lined up diagonally in the southern sky, from left to right, are Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. Only distant Uranus, Neptune and Pluto won't be in on the show. This is the first time that the five planets will appear in the same sky together since January 2005, according to EarthSky.org.

U.S. Navy goes green with biofuels
The Navy is launching a carrier strike group to be powered partly by biofuels as part of its "Great Green Fleet,"meant to*ease*the military’s reliance on foreign oil.*Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack are inspecting the ships Wednesday before they set sail off San Diego. At the head of the pack is the nuclear-powered USS John C. Stennis supercarrier.*Most of the group’s ships will be run for now on a mix made up of 90% petroleum and only 10% biofuels, though the Navy originally aimed for the ratio to be 50/50.
