Boko Haram militants shot people, firebombed huts*and burned children to death in an attack*that killed at least 86 people, according to officials.
The incident happened Saturday night in Dalori village near Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria*and at two nearby camps housing 25,000 refugees.
The Vanguard*newspaper reported that the*attack*came despite claims by the*government that the militants*no longer had the ability to carry out such major*attacks, other than*through suicide bombings, after the military drove them*out of towns and villages in the region last year. The paper*reported that*villagers mistook the extremists, who were dressed in camouflage, for soldiers.
Mohammed Kanar, the area coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, said 86*bodies were collected by Sunday afternoon.*Abba Musa of the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, said*62 survivors were being treated for burns.
Survivor Alamin Bakura told The Associated Press*that several of his family members were killed or wounded in the*the attack, which*lasted*for nearly four hours.

32 dead in Nigeria blast blamed on Boko Haram

Three female suicide bombers blew themselves up, killing*people who*fled*to the neighboring Gamori village, a soldier at the scene told*the*AP.
Other soldiers, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press,*told the news agency that troops arrived at Dalori*but could not overpower the better-armed militants. They said the*extremists*only retreated after more troops arrived with heavier weapons.

Nigerians relish new freedoms after reign of terror by Boko Haram militants

Survivors on Sunday said*it took*too long for help to arrive from*Maiduguri, the military headquarters of the fight against*the militant group, and that*they fear another attack.
Boko Haram, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL,*has*killed about 20,000 people and driven 2.5 million from their homes over a six-year period.
