Severe weather<span style="color: Red;">*</span>pelted the East Coast on Wednesday, killing at least four<span style="color: Red;">*</span>people in Virginia and<span style="color: Red;">*</span>raising the two-day death toll<span style="color: Red;">*</span>to seven<span style="color: Red;">*</span>after<span style="color: Red;">*</span>the system pounded the Deep South a day earlier.
One of those who died was a 2-year-old boy, the Virginia State Police told CNN.
About 45 homes were destroyed in Evergreen, Va., in Appomattox County, where<span style="color: Red;">*</span>one person was killed and seven injured, according to the National Weather Service and State Police.
Wednesday's deaths occurred<span style="color: Red;">*</span>after a possible tornado hit the small town of Waverly, located about 50 miles south of Richmond. There, three people<span style="color: Red;">*</span>died as<span style="color: Red;">*</span>strong storms and tornadoes blasted through the southern U.S.

The worst of the severe weather was expected to hit<span style="color: Red;">*</span>eastern portions of Virginia and the Carolinas, according to the Storm Prediction Center.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Tornado watches were posted from South Carolina to New Jersey, meaning conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop.
The National Weather Service issued advisories.
A wind advisory was in effect for central Virginia through 6 a.m. ET Thursday, with gusts up to 55 mph<span style="color: Red;">*</span>expected.
In North Carolina, a winter weather advisory was issued for several western North Carolina counties and was to be in effect until 7 p.m. ET Friday.
Several<span style="color: Red;">*</span>North Carolina public school systems closed early in advance of the storms,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>AccuWeather reported.
In the Midwest, a<span style="color: Red;">*</span>snowstorm pounded parts of the central U.S. and created airline havoc on<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Wednesday,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>with snow reported from Michigan to Arkansas, including blizzard conditions in Illinois and Indiana.
The National Weather Service in Chicago warned of "horrible travel conditions" in northwestern Indiana and east-central Illinois. Several locations had recorded a half-foot of snow as of mid-afternoon.

Storm snarls Chicago flights, heads east
Nationwide, nearly 2,000 flights were canceled by early Wednesday evening.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Chicago's O'Hare International Airport canceled more than 900 flights alone,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>about 40%<span style="color: Red;">*</span>of the entire day’s schedule at the airport that's a major hub for American and United.
Gusty winds will accompany the rain and snow from the storm, AccuWeather said. The combination of wind and precipitation will result in poor visibility for motorists.
In the Deep South, survey teams from the weather service began investigating the damage Wednesday<span style="color: Red;">*</span>to determine how many tornadoes formed.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>The Storm Prediction Center received<span style="color: Red;">*</span>about 30 reports of tornadoes in<span style="color: Red;">*</span>four southern states.

One person died in Lamar County, Miss., during the severe weather. Two others<span style="color: Red;">*</span>died<span style="color: Red;">*</span>when a suspected tornado slammed into the Sugar Hill RV Park near Convent, La.
A possible tornado destroyed 24 units and damaged six others at the Moorings Apartments in Pensacola, Fla., Escambia County officials said.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>More than 20,000 Georgia customers were without power after the storms, utilities reported Wednesday morning.
The U.S. averages 29 tornadoes in February — most often forming in the Deep South, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.
