Jericho, a lion ally of Zimbabwe's beloved poaching victim*Cecil, is alive and well, the*Zimbabwe wildlife authority and researchers said Sunday.
The killing of Cecil by Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer*during an allegedly illegal hunt sparked a global outcry in recent days. On Saturday, the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force reported*that Jericho, who was seen taking care of Cecil's cubs, had also been poached.
Brent Stapelkamp, who is following Jericho's movements in the Hwange National Park with the help of a satellite collar on the lion, posted Sunday on Facebook that the big cat is alive.
The good news came as Zimbabwe*wildlife authorities alleged that a second American had killed a lion in an illegal hunt several months ago.*The Zimbabwe government named*Jan Casmir Sieski of Murrysville, Pa., as a suspect in another illegal lion hunt, CBS reported. Few details on that hunt were available.
Meanwhile,*in a post on Oxford University's*Wildlife Conservation Research Unit website,*WildCRU's Director David Macdonald *confirmed that Jericho is alive. Both lions were*part of the WildCRU study*Stapelkamp is working on.
Macdonald*said following reports of Jericho's death Saturday, the organization's*field research team and a ranger from*Zimbabwe's*national parks authority set out at daybreak Sunday to look for him.

Status of Jericho the lion disputed
"Jericho was seen alive and well at 6.15 a.m," he said. "He has been feeding on a giraffe kill with the lionesses from his pride."
The Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority also released a photograph of Jericho that it said was taken Sunday morning, the Associated Press reported. The statement from the wildlife authority said*Cecil and Jericho*were partners in a "coalition" but were not related, according to the news agency.
In a Facebook post*Sunday, the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force*apologized for the incorrect report the day before. It blamed a case of mistaken identity.
"Jericho is in fact alive and well and has adopted Cecil's cubs," the organization said. "We were given three separate confirmed reports last night that is was Jericho. We could not reach the research station in Hwange to verify if Jericho was indeed alive after they reported that they were receiving signal from his collar."
It added: "This was a case of mistaken identity, but a lion has in fact been killed...although we are relieved that it was not Jericho, we are not happy that yet another lion has been killed."
Palmer*issued a statement to his patients*and closed his dental practice amid protests over Cecil's death.

Cecil's death causes tourism drop in Zimbabwe
Palmer, 55, allegedly paid about $50,000 to hunt*Cecil. The 13-year-old*lion*was lured away from the Hwange National Park and*shot with a crossbow, then tracked*for 40 hours before being shot*dead.*Palmer said he thought the hunt was legal. A professional hunter and a land owner have appeared in a Zimbabwean court over the animal's death.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating the case and the*Zimbabwe government has called for Palmer's extradition.
