U.Va. suspends fraternities amid rape investigation
The University of Virginia has suspended all fraternities and their social activities until Jan. 9 while the school reviews its policies regarding sexual assault, the university's president announced Saturday. The decision comes amid a police investigation of an alleged rape of a female freshman by seven men at a fraternity party in September 2012. The alleged sexual assault gained national attention after the publication of a Rolling Stone article online Wednesday that describes a university culture that discourages students from coming forward with assault allegations and an administration that would prefer to sweep such cases under the rug in order to protect the school's reputation.

Former District of Columbia mayor Marion Barry dies
Marion Barry Jr., a fiery civil rights activist who rose to prominence as a mayor of Washington, D.C., only to fall in disgrace when he was arrested for smoking crack cocaine, died early Sunday morning. He was 78 years old. No cause of death was given, but Barry had been in and out of the hospital for the last year. He had a history of health problems that included a battle with prostate cancer in the 1990s, a kidney transplant in 2009 and a decades-long struggle with diabetes. He'd even survived a bullet wound in a City Hall shootout in 1978. In a statement released Sunday, President Obama said that he and First Lady Michelle Obama "were saddened to hear" of Barry's death.

Bomb kills at least 45 Afghans at volleyball match
At least 45 people were killed when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vest during a volleyball match in eastern Afghanistan Sunday in the nation's deadliest terrorist attack this year. Paktika Province spokesman Mokhlis Afghan said at least 70 more were injured, many critically, the Afghanistan Times reported. The attack came hours after Afganistan's Parliament accepted a deal allowing thousands of NATO and U.S. troops to remain in the country into 2015. The agreement — approved by Obama — allows U.S. forces to continue to fight al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and aid Afghan troops under attack. That plan also allows for continued air support for the Afghan military.

Ferguson on edge ahead of grand jury ruling
Residents remain on edge in Ferguson, Mo., as the city awaits word on whether a grand jury will indict officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown, 18. The grand jury decision expected as early as this weekend appears to be delayed until Monday at the earliest, according to a federal law enforcement official. The St. Louis County grand jury is expected to reconvene Monday, according to the official who spoke to USA TODAY on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly on the matter. The timing of a decision is still unclear, the official added. Ahead of that announcement, here's what else we know.
Old friend lobs new accusation at Bill Cosby
Mere hours after Bill Cosby played a sold-out comedy show in Melbourne, Fla., and spoke out about having to defend himself "against innuendo," another woman has come forward with an accusation. This time, though, the woman says Cosby did not commit the sexual assault — someone else did. TMZ reported that Joyce Emmon, a friend of Cosby's from the comedy club circuit, said that he once gave her a white pill that he said would help her migraine. Emmon says she then blacked out and woke up in Cosby's bed with a friend of the comedian that she had turned down earlier that night. When she confronted Cosby about what he had given her, he answered, 'It was just a Quaalude.'"
Rain rolling into battered Buffalo
The cold eased and it was no longer snowing Sunday in battered Buffalo and elsewhere around the Great Lakes. But now comes the rain. That could mean intense flooding for the beleaguered region. Areas that saw up to 7 feet of lake-effect snow in recent days were basking in temperatures well above freezing Sunday. Buffalo could see 60 degrees on Monday. But the warm front was bringing showers, and many places will see driving rain by Monday.

Cleveland police fatally shoot boy with replica gun
Police officers in Cleveland fatally shot a 12-year-old boy wielding what turned out to be a replica gun after receiving a 911 call saying a "juvenile" was scaring people with a gun that probably was fake. The boy was shot in the torso after officers responded to reports of a male waving a gun in the playground area of the Cudell Recreation Center on Saturday, the Cleveland Division of Police said in a statement. Officers arrived at the scene and told the boy to raise his hands. He did not comply, instead reaching to his waistband for the gun, and was shot, the statement said.
