ESPN's Stuart Scott, 49, dies after lengthy battle with cancer
Stuart Scott, the ESPN anchor and reporter whose catchphrases became part of the American popular sports vernacular for the past two decades, died Sunday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 49. Scott, who received a standing ovation during his acceptance of the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the 2014 ESPY Awards in July, addressed his uncertain future at the time. "When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer," Scott told the audience. "You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live."
NYPD cops turn backs to de Blasio during Wenjian Liu's funeral
Thousands of police officers and other mourners filled the streets of Brooklyn's Bensonhurst neighborhood under dreary skies Sunday to pay homage to a police officer shot to death while sitting in a patrol car last month. Uniformed officers from across the nation joined family, friends and loved ones for the funeral of officer Wenjian Liu. "He walked a path of courage, a path of sacrifice and a path of kindness," Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the funeral. "This is who he was, and he was taken from us much too soon." Some officers turned their backs on de Blasio's image on the giant outdoor video screen. De Blasio has been accused of showing disrespect for cops in statements he has made in support of nationwide protests against police brutality and racial profiling.
Pope picks diverse group of 15 new cardinals

Pope Francis nominated 15 new cardinals from 14 different nations on Sunday, appointing at least three from countries that never had a church member in the role. Speaking to a crowd in St. Peter's Square, the pontiff named each cardinal, noting they came from every continent and "show the inseparable tie with the church of Rome to churches in the world." Five of the cardinals are from Europe, three from Asia, three from Latin America and two each from Africa and Oceania. No new cardinals from North America were named.

Mike Huckabee ends Fox News show as he looks at presidential race
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee said farewell to his Fox News program on Saturday night as he considers another presidential bid. "I won't make a decision about running until late in the spring of 2015, but the continued chatter has put Fox News into a position that is not fair to them nor is it possible for me to openly determine political and financial support to justify a race," Huckabee said in a statement posted on Facebook. Huckabee has been talking to potential donors and strategists about a possible 2016 race.

North Korea blasts U.S. for sanctions
North Korea bashed the U.S. on Sunday for imposing new sanctions in retaliation for its suspected role in the cyberattack against Sony Pictures, saying the move shows the White House's "inveterate repugnancy and hostility" toward the nation. In a statement carried on the state-run Korean Central News Agency, a spokesman for the foreign ministry again denied the nation was behind the attack, largely seen as a response to Sony's The Interview, a satirical comedy involving a plot to assassinate North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Families pray as search continues for AirAsia victims

Family members of many victims of AirAsia Flight 8501 marked a week since the crash with hymns, prayers and tears Sunday. Rain, rolling waves and low visibility delayed divers from reaching the wreckage after four large objects were detected on the floor of the murky Java Sea. Indonesian officials appeared confident the objects were from the jet that crashed with 162 people aboard. After a week-long search, just 34 bodies have been pulled from the water. Officials said they expect to find many of the passengers and crew still strapped to their seats inside the plane.
Girl, 7, walks away from plane crash that kills family
Federal aviation officials on Sunday were trying to determine what caused a small plane to crash in rural Kentucky — and how a 7-year-old girl was able to walk away from the tragedy that killed her family. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating the crash of a Piper PA-34 near the southwestern Kentucky town of Gilbertsville late Friday. The NTSB scheduled a news conference for Sunday. Kentucky State Police Sgt. Dean Patterson said the crash's lone survivor, Sailor Gutzler, was the daughter of victims Marty Gutzler, 48, and Kimberly Gutzler, 46, of Nashville, Ill. Also killed were the girl's sister, Piper Gutzler, 9, and a cousin, Sierra Wilder, 14.

Sarah Palin bites back at PETA over dog post
Sarah Palin has a clear message for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — chill out. The former Alaska governor slammed PETA after the group criticized her Facebook post featuring her son Trig stepping on the family dog, Jill. "Chill," Palin wrote on Facebook on Saturday in response to the criticism. "At least Trig didn't eat the dog." The controversy started with Palin's New Year's Day post on Facebook. She used 6-year-old Trig's need to get to the sink, stepping on the black Labrador retriever in the way, as an example for overcoming obstacles.
