NYC mayor: Snowstorm could be worst ever
The Northeast was bracing Sunday for a monstrous winter storm that could trigger massive power outages and slam the brakes on air traffic and rush hours from Philadelphia deep into New England. New York City could see up to 20 inches of snow Monday into Tuesday, the National Weather Service predicted. Parts of New England could see 2 feet or more. High winds could cause whiteout conditions, bring down power lines and otherwise aggravate the weather disaster. "This could be the biggest snowstorm in the history of this city," Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a Sunday news conference. "My message for New Yorkers is prepare for something worse than we have ever seen before."

Islamic State video claims Japanese hostage beheaded
The Islamic State reportedly released a new video Saturday claiming one of the two Japanese captives had been beheaded and issuing new demands for the other hostage's release. In the video, Japanese freelance journalist Kenji Goto holds a photo that purportedly shows the dead body of the second hostage, Haruna Yukawa. SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S.-based organization that monitors extremist websites, said the video had been distributed across several Islamic State-linked Twitter accounts. President Obama called Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday to offer condolences. The president, who made the call during his trip to India, expressed "solidarity with the Japanese people," said a White House statement.

Bill Belichick on Deflategate: Patriots 'followed every rule to the letter'
New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Saturday he believes the Patriots "followed every rule, to the letter" in regards to the inflation of their footballs in the AFC Championship Game. Belichick, who called an impromptu news conference Saturday afternoon, revealed details of an internal study aimed at finding answers for underinflated footballs used in a 45-7 win against the Indianapolis Colts. Belichick said he studied the science behind why the air pressure inside footballs changes depending on environmental conditions and claimed the customary practice of rubbing the footballs before the game changed the pressure, leading many fans to give the coach a new nickname: Bill Belichick "The Science Guy." Bill Nye, for one, is not impressed. On Sunday's episode of Good Morning America, Nye refuted Belichick's theory. "I'm not too worried about coach Belichick competing with me. What he said didn't make any sense. Rubbing the football I don't think you can change the pressure. To really change the pressure you need one of these, the inflation needle."

Greece's anti-bailout Syriza party wins vote
Greece's radical left-wing Syriza party won a decisive — and historic — victory in Sunday's elections that could threaten global markets and throw the country's future in the eurozone into question. Syriza, led by Alexis Tsipras, appeared just shy of a big enough margin over Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' convervatives to govern without needing to form a coalition. Samaras conceded Sunday, almost four hours after polls closed and after exit polls showed an overwhelming win for Syriza. The defeat will likely focus attention on the opening of world financial markets Monday, which may be upended if Syriza leader Tsipras keeps promises to undo the work of the previous government by ending the painful cutbacks and renegotiating the bailout package that kept Greece financially afloat since 2010.
Supporters of left-wing Syriza party react after exit poll results in Athens, Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015. A senior official in Greece's governing conservatives has conceded defeat to the radical left Syriza party in Sunday's national elections. "We lost," Health Minister Makis Voridis told private Mega TV. "The extent of that result is not yet clear."<span style="color: Red;">*</span>(Photo: Petros Giannakouris, AP)![]()
Second try to lift AirAsia fuselage from Java Sea fails
The effort to raise the fuselage from doomed AirAsia Flight 8501 failed again Sunday, and an Indonesian official said the wreckage may be too fragile to lift from the depths of the choppy, murky Java Sea. On Sunday, a wire rope attached to lifting balloons broke. An attempt to raise the fuselage Saturday failed when the balloons deflated. Flight 8501 was bound for Singapore from Surabaya, Indonesia, in stormy weather on Dec. 28 when it suddenly lurched upward at fighter-jet speeds. Authorities say that caused an air "stall" -- the engines kept roaring but the wings could no longer provide lift, causing the Airbus 320-200 to plummet into the sea. More than 90 bodies of the 162 people on board remain missing, and officials anticipate that most are in the fuselage.
Patrick Dempsey, wife file for divorce
Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey, 49, and his wife, makeup artist Jillian Fink, have announced they are splitting after 15 years of marriage, which they confirmed in an exclusive statement to People. "It is with careful consideration and mutual respect that we have decided to end our marriage," the statement reads. "Our primary concern remains the well-being of our children, and we ask with profound gratitude that you respect our family's privacy at this very sensitive time." The marriage produced three children: daughter Tallulah Fyfe, 12, and twins Patrick and Darby Galen, 7. It had also weathered his career comeback, from struggling former '80s rom-com actor to TV star and his 10 years on the hit ABC medical soap.
Though they are few and far between, some celebrity breakups are genuinely surprising.
