Protester charged with shooting officers in Ferguson

A 20-year-old protester has been charged with shooting two police officers in Ferguson, Mo., last week, authorities said Sunday. County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch said Jeffrey Williams was charged with two counts of assault in the first degree, one count of firing a weapon from a vehicle, and three counts of armed criminal action. McCulloch said Williams admitted firing the shots but said he was shooting at someone else. "We're not sure we buy that part of it," McCulloch said, adding that the handgun used in the shooting has been recovered. He said Williams was involved in the demonstration that was wrapping up when the incident took place.

Subject of HBO documentary arrested in murder probe
Robert Durst, subject of the HBO documentary The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, has been arrested in New Orleans and accused of a Los Angeles murder. Durst, 71, is a member of a prominent New York City family that owns a multibillion-dollar real estate company. He was being held Sunday on a first-degree murder warrant, Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office documents indicated. The Los Angeles Times reports that authorities in Los Angeles have been interviewing new witnesses in the 2000 slaying of writer and Durst confidant Susan Berman. Durst discussed the case in the HBO documentary series, which wraps up Sunday night.

Obama cracks wise about Kenya, birth certificates
When President Obama starts talking about Kenya and birth certificates, you know it's the time of year for White House comedy routines. "Everybody looks wonderful," Obama said at Saturday's Gridiron Club dinner. "It's like Downton Abbey — except less funny. " During his 12-minute routine at the Gridiron — one of a string of spring dinners at which presidents and other politicians are expected to tell jokes — Obama made fun of opponents, allies and himself. The Gridiron Club is a group of Washington journalists who put on an annual dinner featuring skits, music, speakers from each party, and occasionally the president himself.

10 Americans to leave Sierra Leone amid Ebola scare
Ten clinicians are being flown to the USA after coming in contact with an American health worker with Ebola in Sierra Leone. The workers are flying on non-commercial aircraft to limit contact with others. The 10 clinicians "came to the aid' of an American colleague with Ebola while in West Africa, but so far have no symptoms, according to Partners in Health, a Boston-based aid organization. The clinicians are being flown to the USA "out of an abundance of caution," the aid group says. The American health worker with Ebola was volunteering with Partners in Health and arrived at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Md., on Friday in a charter plane. The health worker, who has not been identified, is in serious condition, according to the NIH.

Pacific nation devastated by historic Cyclone Pam

Communities were in a shambles, communications remained near zero and access to clean water was a severe challenge Sunday on the Vanuatu archipelago almost two days after Cyclone Pam blasted through the remote South Pacific island chain, the International Red Cross said Sunday. Estimates on the death toll varied widely, with some officials reporting at least six dead while unconfirmed reports put the death toll at more than 40. The immense devastation, damage to the communications systems and remote nature of the chain of 65 inhabited islands made damage assessments of the tragedy difficult.
Kerry: Iran letter 'calculated' to interfere with talks
Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday sharply criticized a letter to Iranian leaders from 47 Senate Republicans, saying it was "absolutely calculated to interfere" with the negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. Kerry called the letter, which warned Iran that any deal signed by President Obama and U.S. allies could be undone by a future president or Congress, "unprecedented." Despite ferocious political blowback, U.S. Sen. John McCain is defending his decision to join 46 of his fellow Republican senators in writing the letter.

McConnell links vote on AG nominee to trafficking bill

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday that he will not schedule a vote to confirm Loretta Lynch as the nation's next attorney general until the Senate breaks its impasse on a human trafficking bill. "If they want to have time to turn to the attorney general next week, we need to finish up this human-trafficking bill," the Kentucky Republican said on CNN's State of the Union. McConnell said he was not issuing a "threat," but by linking the two issues he is pressuring Democrats to drop their objections to a provision in the trafficking bill that would prohibit money in a victim's compensation fund from being used to fund abortions.
