'Execution-style killing of a police officer'
Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was fatally shot while filling his patrol car at a gas station Friday evening, sparking an intense manhunt in the Houston area. The suspect Shannon J. Miles, 30, was arrested Saturday and charged with capital murder. Police are still looking a motive in the case. Miles has had several arrests dating back to 2005, and served several short stints in jail ranging from 6 to 10 days, but none of those involved Goforth. Sheriff Ron Hickman described the shooting as "a cold blooded execution," and linked the shooting to a national backlash over several recent killings of unarmed black people by police officers. Goforth was white and Miles, who will likely be arraigned Monday, is black.

Death, suffering cloaks search for a better life
Three severely dehydrated children were among 26 migrants found on a truck in Austria on Saturday, just two days after 71 migrants were found dead in that country. Four men accused of involvement in the trafficking that led to the deaths appeared in court Saturday. In both cases, many of the migrants were from Syria, which has been torn apart by war. The scramble of migrants from Africa and the Middle East has overwhelmed parts of Europe amid shocking death totals. The European Union set a summit for Sept. 14 aimed at a unified policy on asylum. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, France's Bernard Cazeneuve and Britain's Theresa May pledged to support a system for registering African refugees fleeing to Greece and Italy.

Remembering Hurricane Katrina, 10 years later
Several events commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina took place this weekend. The storm made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005, in Mississippi, wreaking havoc along the Gulf Coast, but it is the devastating floods in New Orleans that left the sharpest impression in the American collective memory. Former president George W. Bush — widely criticized for not visiting the city immediately after the floods that inundated 80% of the city and leading what's been considered a clumsy and slow-footed initial federal response to the disaster — returned to the rebuilt city Friday. "We honor the resilience of a great American city whose levees gave out but whose people never gave up," Bush said inside Warren Easton Charter High School in central New Orleans.

Bernie Sanders closes to within 7 points of Clinton in Iowa
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has surged to within 7 points of former secretary of State Hillary Clinton according to a new Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa Poll. Clinton is now the first choice of 37% of likely Democratic caucusgoers while Sanders is the pick for 30%, meaning Clinton has lost a third of her supporters since May. This is the first time Clinton has dropped below the 50% mark in four polls conducted by the Register and Bloomberg Politics this year. Vice President Joe Biden, who has not yet decided whether to join the race, came in at 14%. In the GOP race, the poll found Trump holding 23% of support in Iowa, with another Washington outsider, Ben Carson, coming in second at 18%.
Obama is Alaska-bound with focus on climate change
In his weekly address Saturday, President Obama said that Alaskan villages are already in danger from rising sea levels due to climate change. "If another country threatened to wipe out an American town, we'd do everything in our power to protect ourselves. Climate change poses the same threat, right now." But environmentalists aren't all cheering. "Climate leaders don't drill the Arctic," said activist organization CREDO. Obama defended permitting Shell to drill off the Alaskan coast, saying that his administration also mandated strict safety standards. The president visits Alaska on Monday.

Journalists sentenced to prison in Egypt
Al-Jazeera English journalists Mohammed Fahmy of Canada, Peter Greste (Australia) and Baher Mohammed (Egypt) were sentenced to three years in prison because they had not registered with the country's journalist syndicate, they brought in equipment without security officials' approval, they broadcast "false news" on Al-Jazeera and used a hotel as a broadcasting point without permission. "The verdict today sends a very dangerous message in Egypt," said Fahmy's human rights lawyer Amal Clooney (who is married to George Clooney). "It sends a message that journalists can be locked up for simply doing their job."

Fan has fatal fall from upper deck at MLB game
A fan died after falling from the upper deck stands at Atlanta's Turner Field on Saturday night during a game between the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees. Police said Gregory Murray, 60, of Alpharetta, Ga., fell from the upper deck into the stands below during the seventh inning of the game. Fans watching from home found out about the incident from the Fox Sports broadcaster. "Someone just fell over the upper-deck right below us; oh my gosh," the announcer said. But the teams apparently were unaware of the incident, and play continued while medical personnel applied CPR. Murray was the third fan to die from a fall at Turner Field in eight seasons.

Remnants of Erika soaks Florida while Fred forms
The remnants of Tropical Storm Erika brought heavy rain and gusty winds to southern and central Florida on Sunday but was showing no signs of regaining its former fury. Erika devastated the tiny Caribbean island of Dominica earlier in the week, leaving at 20 dead and another 50 missing. A flood watch was issued for the southern half of the state through Monday morning. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Fred formed in the far eastern Atlantic with winds of 50 mph, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue a hurricane warning for the Cape Verde Islands.
