LENOIR, N.C. — A 43-year old mystery has been solved after divers found the body of Amos Shook in his car at the bottom of Lake Rhodhiss in Caldwell County.
Divers using advanced sonar technology were able to locate Shook's 1968 Pontiac Catalina in about 30 feet of water Tuesday.
When the car was pulled out of the water, human remains were found inside, along with an ID, that led authorities to determine it was Shook, 44, who had gone missing in February 1972.
"We found a wallet and some ID cards were in it. It amazed us how preserved that stuff was," said Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones.
The state Bureau of Investigations and the North Catawba Fire and Rescue Department helped in the search and recovery of the car.

Sheriff's Lt. Aaron Barlowe said the remains will go to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identification. He said there were no signs of foul play.
Investigators said they have no idea how Shook's car came to be in the lake. The area around what is now a boat launch looks very different from what it looked like in 1972.
Lake Rhodhiss is approximately 75 miles northwest of Charlotte.
The sheriff said Shook's daughter had come to the office asking if detectives could look again at the case of her missing father, but there were no old files.
"Records for that far back, there is not a lot that was left because I know we looked for it," Jones said.
Jones, who was 7-years-old in 1972 when Shook went missing, said he is glad to finally bring some closure to the family.
"Forty-three years — that's a long time for somebody to be missing and for a family to wonder where they are at," he said.
