Winners and losers are already emerging on the world stage in the wake of the*British vote to leave the European Union.
British voters turned toward populist leaders calling for independence and greater autonomy, while rejecting their own prime minister, President Obama and the national leaders of Europe’s most power nations, France and Germany.
The first political casualty is British Prime Minister David Cameron, who on Friday pledged to resign by October.

The political repercussions will extend beyond Britain.*“The French president and the German chancellor face elections next year, which could be very difficult for both,” said the Gérard Araud, the French ambassador to the United States. “The Americans should be worried because it’s obviously a deep crisis and weakening of their main ally.”

France's Hollande expresses 'deep regret' over Brexit
President Obama and Germany and France, Europe’s most populous and prosperous countries, all pleaded for Britain to remain in the EU, and have now lost credibility in Britain, said Nile Gardiner, a Europe analyst at the Heritage Foundation.

Europeans shocked, worried over 'Brexit'
Obama said Britain would go “to the back of the queue” when it comes to negotiating a free trade agreement with the United States if it chose to lose its free trade status with a vote to leave the EU.

"The European project will begin to unravel because of Brexit,” Gardiner predicted.
“Today was a very bad day for… a lot of political elites on the world stage,” Gardiner said.
French President Francois Hollande and German chancellor Angela*Merkel, who presided over financial bailouts for Italy, Spain and Greece in the past few years,*will face powerful challenges from politicians in nationalist parties that are EU skeptics and who will be*energized by the British vote, said Jonathan Schanzer, vice president for research at*the Foundation for Defense of Democracy.
“I would think Chancellor Merkel is in a tough spot here,” he said. “Germany made special dispensation to all of the countries that were near collapse*and here Britain just walks away. It doesn’t look good for her.”
Among the biggest winners is Russian President Vladimir Putin, who sees a “united front of Europe showing cracks if not crumbling,” Schanzer said.

NATO says UK to stay 'strong ally' despite Brexit
Extremist European parties on the right and left that seek nationalist goals and are openly anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim and are skeptical of EU regulations, will also gain influence after Thursday’s results, he said.
In France, Marine Le Pen, who leads the far-right*National Front party, celebrated on Twitter.
“Victory for Freedom! As I have been asking for years, we must now have the same referendum in*France*and EU countries,” Le Pen wrote.
Victoire de la liberté ! Comme je le demande depuis des années, il faut maintenant le même référendum en France et dans les pays de l'UE MLP

Other countries now see that it’s possible, using democratic means,*to break off from the EU, Schanzer*said.
In the United States, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, claimed victory Friday after supporting Brexit.
“If Europe begins to break apart there are real ramifications for U.S. foreign policy and cause for concern,” Schanzer said. “Isolationists (in the US) are probably looking at this and saying this is a good thing.”
