Republican presidential contender Carly Fiorina on Sunday maintained that*she saw footage*of a live aborted fetus on Planned Parenthood videos*despite the fact that her claim has been widely refuted.
Fiorina said the scene, which she described during the Sept. 16 GOP presidential debate, “absolutely does exist.”
Planned Parenthood “will not and cannot deny” that live fetuses are having their brains harvested, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO said in an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press. Instead, she said, supporters of the group are picketing her and throwing condoms at her to distract from the issue.
The “hideous reality,” she said, is that “this is happening in America today and taxpayers are paying for it.”
In an editorial posted Saturday night, The Washington Post dissected Fiorina’s continued insistence that she saw the footage that others say simply doesn’t exist.
“Caught making a false claim, she couldn’t just admit she made a mistake but instead doubled down and worsened the falsehood….Ms. Fiorina could have acknowledged her error while maintaining, fairly, that the tapes contain other disturbing images and language and while affirming her objections to Planned Parenthood.”
She declined to definitively say she supported shutting down the government*over funding of Planned Parenthood, though she did not rule out the possibility. She said the president and Democrats should have to “explain this to the American public” if they want to shut down the government over it.
“There are a variety of ways to deal with this but I believe this is something we must stand up and fight for,” said Fiorina. “This is about the character of our nation.”
Fiorina also continued to defend her record at HP, focusing on jobs she created rather than eliminated, contrasting herself with Democratic front-runner*Hillary Clinton who, Fiorina said, “never created a job. Never saved a job.”
Asked about the retirement of House Speaker John Boehner, Fiorina said, “Every leader has a season.”
