HUDSON, N.H. —*Down to his final desperate hours of trying to sway New Hampshire presidential primary voters to his side, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is turning to the Clinton story for inspiration — Bill Clinton’s story, not Hillary’s.
“Everybody told him the night before the New Hampshire primary, he was going to be in single digits and was finished,’’ Christie said of the 42nd president’s 1992 bid on ABC’s Good Morning America, before heading out to four campaign events in New Hampshire on the day before the primary election.
“And then the next day he came in second place and his campaign went on to win the nomination.’’
Christie is facing a far more difficult challenge in Tuesday’s voting, however. He currently stands sixth in the field of Republican hopefuls with a 5% average in New Hampshire polls as compiled by Real Clear Politics.
Fifth-place Jeb Bush has double the support Christie has. Second-place Marco Rubio has triple the support. The GOP front-runner is Donald Trump with a 32% average.
Christie’s first campaign event Monday was at the Gilchrist Metal Company, where he introduced by the Cake Boss, fellow New Jerseyan Buddy Valastro.
“I honestly believe he would make an awesome president,’’ Valastro said at the rally.
Christie returned the flattery.
“His cakes look amazing. But they taste even better,’’ Christie said.
