DERRY, N.H. — Chris Christie had a ready answer when a town hall questioner<span style="color: Red;">*</span>asked why he doesn't<span style="color: Red;">*</span>go after Donald Trump.
"I'll do what I need to do when I need to do it," Christie told the Trump critic on Thursday. "Trust me on this: I have a plan."
If current polls are accurate, the New Jersey governor is part of a large group of candidates fighting it out for second place behind Trump ahead of the Feb. 9 primary in New Hampshire. The goal for Trump's opponents is to become the main alternative to the maverick front-runner coming out of the Granite State.
During the town hall in Derry, Christie suggested that one of his potential tacks against Trump is the businessman's lack of political<span style="color: Red;">*</span>experience. He questioned whether Trump<span style="color: Red;">*</span>could get<span style="color: Red;">*</span>things done in government, especially his major proposals like a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.
"I tell everybody who goes to a Donald Trump event, if you get to ask a question, just ask him 'how?' " Christie<span style="color: Red;">*</span>said. "I don’t care which of the things he talks about just ask him, 'How?<span style="color: Red;">*</span>How?' "
The governor also said, "I can answer 'how?'<span style="color: Red;">*</span>because I’ve done it." He looped in other Republican opponents by saying "that’s the difference between a governor and Donald Trump. That’s the different between a governor and (senator) Marco Rubio. That’s the different between a governor and (senator)<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Ted Cruz."
As for Trump,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Christie said: "Everyone is kind of obsessed with him. I don’t quite get it. Here’s what I don’t get about it, no one has voted yet."
The town hall questioner —<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Deb Andersen, a Democrat<span style="color: Red;">*</span>from nearby Medford, Mass. — told<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Christie that<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Trump's opponents don't have much time; the New Hampshire primary is less than 20 days away.
"When are you —<span style="color: Red;">*</span>and you’re a fellow goomba —<span style="color: Red;">*</span>when are you going to take the gloves off and start smacking him around?" she asked.
The volatile New Jersey governor first replied, "you know I think it’s the first time in my political career that people have said to me you’re not aggressive enough."
He will go after Trump "when I think it makes sense to," Christie added. "I’m not in this to just beat Donald Trump. I’m in this to become president of the United States and I’m going to make certain decisions about when I want to say what I’m going to say."
