Hillary Clinton won the Florida and North Carolina primaries*Tuesday, and then scored a big Rust Belt victory by wining Ohio as well,*the Associated Press and news networks projected.
With Missouri and Illinois still counting votes, Clinton was assured of expanding*her*commanding lead over Bernie Sanders in the delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination.
Clinton had been expeced to win the South, but the*bigger battleground on Tuesday was in the Midwest, where Sanders was hoping to score a victory there to match his upset win in Michigan a week ago.
The former secretary of State is trying to*shift the Democratic primary narrative back to her*inevitability as the party's*nominee.*Clinton could claim she’s won about twice as many*states as Sanders.
Democrats award their delegates proportionally in each state, so Sanders will also make gains even if he does not win states.

Who's winning the night? Big moments from Tuesday's primaries

Despite inconsistent polling in a number of the states, Sanders appeared*to be narrowing Clinton’s lead in Ohio and Illinois heading into Tuesday's vote*and Missouri was considered*a tossup.*A loss in*Illinois, where Clinton was born and raised, would be a blow to her.
The race is exposing a populist divide in the Democratic Party as Sanders escalates attacks on Clinton’s record on trade and her paid speeches to Wall Street banks.
Like in Michigan, voter angst over trade deals is expected to help Sanders in other Midwest states, in particular with white, working-class voters in these states hit hard by manufacturing job losses.

In an MSNBC town hall Monday night, Sanders said Clinton has supported “virtually all of these trade agreements, which have turned out to be an unmitigated disaster for working class people in this country.”
Later that night, appearing separately, Clinton defended her record by saying Sanders is, essentially, an ideologue.*“I know you have to trade with the rest of the world,” she said. “He just is reflexively against anything that has any international implications.” Clinton has previously defended her record by saying she voted against the only trade agreement to come before her in the Senate.
For her part, Clinton is focusing most of her fire on the GOP field.*In the town hall, Clinton accused Republican front-runner Donald Trump of “inciting mob violence” at his rallies that recalls lynchings. “It’s something that has a deep, almost psychological resonance to people who have ever been in any position of feeling somewhat fearful,” she said.
While Clinton wants to wrap up the nomination as quickly as possible to pivot to the general election, she is now walking a tightrope when it comes to Sanders.
Ahead of the Michigan primary, Clinton attacked Sanders for a vote against a 2009 automotive industry bailout, drawing fire from a visibly*irritated Sanders, who said he supported the legislation until it became a Wall Street “bailout.”
Yet Clinton will eventually need Sanders’ help in convincing his supporters to back her, and the longer and nastier the primary is, the harder it will be for the two to come together.
Clinton has a strong base of support in Ohio, which she carried in the 2008 primary against Barack Obama.*Yet Democratic officials are expecting potentially heavy turnout in areas like Cuyahoga County around Cleveland, where Sanders is making his trade appeal to working-class voters.
Even if Sanders has a strong showing in Ohio, Illinois and Missouri, his path to the nomination would remain steep, according to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. Clinton's*decisive victories in North Carolina and Florida mirror the large margins she scored in other southern states, including Georgia and South Carolina, and explain why Sanders is so far behind in the delegate count.
At this point, he would still need 54% of the remaining pledged delegates just to draw even with Clinton due to her strong showing in the South.
Clinton began the night with 768 pledged delegates compared with 554 for Sanders. Including superdelegates, Clinton holds 1,235 total, more than half the amount needed to clinch the nomination. Sanders has 580.
