CARROLLTON, Texas — The unemployed mechanic who was fatally shot after attacking Dallas police headquarters had been pushed past his "breaking point" by police and others, his father says.
James Boulware rolled up to the headquarters building in an armored van Saturday, strafing the building with automatic weapons fire, shattering glass and sending officers scrambling for cover, police said. Boulware also rammed a police car and planted pipe bombs packed with shrapnel before racing from the scene.
A 10-mile chase ended with a brief cellphone negotiation with police. When talks broke down, a police sniper fatally shot Boulware through the van's windshield. No one else was injured throughout the harrowing confrontation.
Boulware's father, Jim, told WFAA-TV that his son visited Friday and even mowed his lawn. But Jim Boulware said his son had a troubled relationship with some family members and resented law enforcement after losing custody of his son.
"He said, 'I've got nothing left,' an emotional Jim Boulware said. 'I've lost everything I have and I got nothing left. And they've taken my son."

He said his own son's life began to unravel two years ago after he was arrested for a domestic dispute with his mother and uncle. According to an arrest affidavit, James choked them both during an argument.
"He left, and she called the police on him and made out like he was a terrorist," Jim Boulware said.
James Boulware was also accused of stockpiling weapons and making threats against schools and churches in Paris, Texas. The charges were dropped, but his father said he lost his job as a mechanic and eventually lost custody of his son, a child now in the sixth grade.
"And he did blame the police for taking his son," the suspect's father said.
Unable to find work, Jim Boulware said while his son became increasingly depressed, he never suspected he was planning revenge.
"I had no idea," the elder Boulware said. "And I told him all the way through: 'Always, James whatever you do, don't do anything stupid.'"
Police Chief David Brown said several officers narrowly missed being shot as Boulware reloaded and continued blasting away from locations around the building's perimeter.
"We are blessed that our officers survived this ordeal," Police Chief David Brown told reporters. "There are bullet holes in squad cars where officers were sitting, bullet holes in the lobby where staff was sitting."
Anna Maesky, the decease Boulware's aunt, said she and her family wanted to apologize to the officers involved in the shootout and their families.
"We completely support the Dallas Police Department, the city of Dallas and police departments nationwide for keeping us safe," Maesky said.
James Boulware's mother, Jeannine Hammond, said she was relieved that no one else was hurt. She said her son was tormented by voices in his head and likely suffered from schizophrenia
"I think he went in knowing he wouldn't come out," Hammond told WFAA-TV. She believes what happened amounts to "suicide by police."
Jim Boulware found it difficult to describe losing his son, but says he knows why his son is gone.
"We all have a breaking point, and they pushed him past it," he said through tears.
