Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is backing out of his scheduled Saturday appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference, according to event organizers and the Trump campaign.
"Very disappointed @realDonaldTrump has decided at the last minute to drop out of #CPAC — his choice sends a clear message to conservatives," conference officials tweeted Friday.
The conference has been a must-attend event for Republican presidential candidates. Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson were all scheduled to appear Friday afternoon.
Trump will be in Wichita, Kan., for a<span style="color: Red;">*</span>rally on Saturday prior to the Kansas caucus, his campaign said Friday. Trump<span style="color: Red;">*</span>will also be speaking at the caucus and then leaving<span style="color: Red;">*</span>for Orlando, Fla., and a crowd of approximately 20,000 people or more, aides said.
"Because of this, he will not be able to speak at CPAC as he has done for many consecutive years," the campaign said in a statement.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>"Mr. Trump would like to thank Matt Schlapp and all of the executives at CPAC and looks forward to returning to next year, hopefully as President of the United States."
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., said he supports Trump's decision.
"Trump was right to skip CPAC," Gingrich tweeted. "The votes are in Kansas not Washington. Why give the anti-Trump activists a target?"
