FERGUSON, Mo.*—*St. Louis County authorities said Wednesday a state of emergency would remain in effect in Ferguson for at least 24 more hours despite no*arrests Tuesday night during*a relatively quiet evening of streets protests.
County Executive Steve Stenger, who had earlier hinted he might life the order*as early as Wednesday, instead said it would remain in place for at least one more day, KSDK-TV reports.*The declaration has allowed St. Louis County police to assume policing authority in Ferguson, a suburb of St.Louis.
Police said there were no arrests or confrontations Tuesday night, with officers at one point "negotiating" to convince a group of activists to leave a roadway.
"It is because of their ability to maintain order that I find it prudent to continue the state of emergency for at least the next 24 hours," said Stenger in a release Wednesday afternoon.
Some officers also reported rocks being thrown at them, but "police did not take an action, and soon after the rock throwing stopped," police spokesman Shawn McGuire said in a statement.
Although a tactical operations unit was on standby Tuesday night, it was never deployed. Nor was any smoke or tear gas used, police said.
The lessened tension came on a day that police released a video showing*a young man pulling a gun from his waistband moments before he was shot by law enforcement during protests in the area over the weekend.
The St. Louis County Police Department released the video of Tyrone Harris, Jr., 18, who was*hospitalized Sunday in critical condition.
The protests this week were called to mark the first anniversary of the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
Brown, who was black, was*fatally shot by a white police officer following a confrontation on a Ferguson street on Aug. 9, 2014. Brown's death set off a wave of sometimes violent protests, although a grand jury and a Justice Department probe both found that former officer Darren Wilson used justifiable force in the shooting.
After hundreds of protesters began marching into a street Monday night, police using loudspeakers told them to move out of traffic. When they didn't comply, officers advanced and took several people into custody.
At least one officer also fired pepper spray into the crowd. More arrests followed before protests and the police presence began to diminish at 1 a.m. Tuesday.
In St. Louis on Monday, police also arrested 57 people during protests outside the Thomas F. Eagleton Courthouse. The demonstrations were part of events dubbed #MoralMonday. Clergy members prayed in front of the building and spread oil on it, saying they were anointing it.
