PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A police officer was shot and killed early Sunday in Tarpon Springs, Fla.
The Tarpon Springs Police Department identified the officer killed as 45-year-old Charles "Charlie K" Kondek.
The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. at an apartment complex on Grand Boulevard in Tarpon Springs, about 25 miles northwest of Tampa. Police were originally called for a noise ordinance complaint with a suspect banging on residential doors. When police arrived the suspect shot Kondek and then attempted to flee in a vehicle but crashed his car into a pole and then a vehicle.

Police caught the suspect, who is now in custody. Kondek was transported to Florida Hospital North Pinellas where he later died from his injuries.
Kondek served the city of Tarpon Springs as a sworn law enforcement officer for 17 years, many of which were on the midnight shift. Originally from New York, he previously served for more than five years as a New York City police officer before moving to Florida.
Police have scheduled a news conference for Sunday afternoon to provide more details about the incident.
The shooting comes just a day after two New York City police officers were killed in an ambush-style shooting.
