A little birdie interrupted Bernie Sanders during his rally in Portland, Oregon, got a standing ovation from the crowd and was given the name of "Birdie Sanders" on social media. USA TODAY
Last week: Donald Trump extended his delegate lead,*Bernie Sanders won*five out of six, news broke about a sex scandal involving one of the five candidates least likely to have a sex scandal, and Sanders attracted a bird to his rally podium, Snow White-style.
This week's lineup: no primaries, no caucuses, no debates.
While we're in a bit of a lull, if you have*a question about something you haven't seen us cover yet, tweet at your FTR crew*—*@RGJBrettMcG, @jmestepa and @joannaallhands*— and we'll see what we can find out. In the meantime, you can also sign up for the For the Record newsletter. Let's kick off this palate-cleanser week with Bernie Sanders' weekend dominance ...
[h=2]Three cheers for Bernie[/h]Bernie Sanders, smiling for once.*(Photo: George Frey, Getty Images)
Many thought his campaign was*dead, but over this weekend Bernie Sanders resurrected his chances like —*shoot, I had an analogy for this.*That other guy ... you know,*Jewish ex-carpenter ... he*went up against the establishment ...*eh, it'll come to me. Caucus results can be unpredictable, and a Sanders*sweep wasn't out of the question, but few would have bet on Bernie's dominance over Hillary Clinton: 70% to 30% in Hawaii, 73% to 27% in Washington, and 82% to 18% in Alaska. Overall, Bernie won 104 delegates in the three contests compared to Hillary's 38, making solid progress on*the delegate gap (more on that below).*Next up is Wisconsin, where Clinton is hoping to reverse her 2008 struggles, while Bernie surges in the national polls*—*oh, Arthur Miller!*That's who I was trying to remember.
[h=2]Fuzzy delegate math[/h]Delegate selection is about as structured as a 10th-round Jenga tower.*(Photo: AP)
Winning five out of the last six states is a pretty good run for Bernie Sanders, but does*it make a*Hillary Clinton*win less inevitable? The eventual nominee will need 2,383 delegates to clinch.*As it stands now:
Overall delegate count:*Hillary Clinton*—*1,712 /*Bernie Sanders*—*1,004
Yikes. Sanders needs to capture 67.3% of the remaining delegates, both regular and superdelegates, to take the nomination. But hey, those superdelegates could change their minds about their support*for Hillary*— what do the numbers look like with just plain old voter-selected*delegates?
Overall delegate count, without superdelegates:*Hillary Clinton*— 1,243 / Bernie Sanders*— 975
Still a deficit, but not nearly as insurmountable. But wait, can the voter-selected delegates switch their allegiances too? It's rare, but it happens often enough that there's a name for them ("faithless electors")*—*some states have laws preventing this, but not all of them, and the Democratic National Committee charter and bylaws are silent on the issue.*Let's toss*out the not-legally-bound*delegates from Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Texas*and Utah, as well as the ones from American Samoa,*Northern Marianas and the Democrats Abroad. What does it look like now?
Overall legally bound delegate count:*Hillary Clinton*— 726 / Bernie Sanders*— 643
So nearly 1,000*Hillary delegates and more than*300 Bernie delegates*are voting based on*tradition and/or their pledges to the candidates. Sanders will either need to keep up his win streak or overthrow centuries-old*Democratic party customs over the next 10 weeks to win the nomination. It's a stretch, but it's far more plausible than:
Everyone decides*to re-vote*based on*alphabetical order of candidates:*Lincoln Chafee*—*2,304
[h=2]Sunday talk show roundup[/h]Chuck Todd: "Look, I'm not going to get myself all dolled up every Sunday if all the guests are just going to phone in."*(Photo: William B. Plowman, NBC)
Donald Trump made just one appearance on the Sunday political talk shows as more hosts demand live video of their guests instead of phone calls*— because dammit, if Trump is giving all these interviews in his jammies, we want to be able to see it. Except for Hillary, everyone had something to say yesterday morning:
"The Republican tabulation system is a broken system."*—? Donald Trump, ABC's This Week
Think the Democratic primary system is shaky? Ted Cruz came in second in Louisiana,*but may be able to walk away with more delegates than Trump*if he can successfully*sway five delegates pledged to Marco Rubio and another five unpledged Louisiana delegates.
"There was a successful program in New York City that was started under Mayor Michael Bloomberg. *It did exactly this."*—? Ted Cruz, Fox News Sunday
Cruz defended his much-maligned plan to patrol Muslim communities, comparing it to a program formerly conducted in the nation's largest city which "engaged cooperatively with the Muslim community."
"We're going to look at it every single day, and we'll see what happens."*—? John Kasich, NBC's Meet the Press
No, that wasn't about whether Kasich should continue his campaign ... that was what he said when Meet the Press host Chuck Todd asked Kasich if he would stand by his pledge to support Donald Trump if he wins the GOP nomination.
"Obviously, you want to prevent those attacks before they take place."*—? Bernie Sanders, CNN's State of the Union
Jake Tapper asked if a President Sanders would launch a preemptive military strike against a terrorist group posing an imminent threat against the United States. Sanders said he would, but said that "Muslim troops on the ground" need to be the ones to do the heavy fighting against ISIS.

[h=2]More from the campaign trail[/h][h=2]#BirdieSanders[/h]The Internet went nuts when a bird landed on Bernie Sanders' podium during a rally in Portland, Oregon. Sanders said*the bird was making a request for world peace;*a*skeptical*Melanie Daniels immediately announced her endorsement*of Hillary Clinton.
