Three people died and three remained missing Sunday after a pontoon boat smashed into a bridge on the Ohio River near Louisville, Ky., authorities said.
Louisville Fire Chief Greg Frederick said four people were rescued after the boat hit the Clark Memorial Bridge late Saturday, apparently during an Independence Day fireworks display. Frederick told WHAS-TV that the search for the missing was hamstrung by the swift current.
"We're unable to put divers in the water due to the current. So we are continuing a search on the surface only using the air unit and things of that nature," Frederick said.
Boats and helicopters were used in the search. One body was found on the Indiana side of the river, Frederick said.
The Coast Gurad said it had established a "safety zone" that effectively blocked four miles of river from boat traffic to allow room for the search.
The four known survivors were hospitalized in stable condition. Fire department spokesman Sal Melendez told the Associated Press the known fatalities included two adults and a child, and that a child was among the missing.
The capsized pontoon boat was found near bridge construction, WAVE-TV reported. The boat, about 20 feet long, was towed back to shore, the station said, adding that markings indicated it was a rental.
Thousands had gathered along Waterfront Park for a festival of music, food and family activities. The river routinely fills with boats for the fireworks display.
