Mike Huckabee threw out some advice for Rand Paul when dealing with TV interviewers: Watch out for those pitches that are up and in.
The former Arkansas governor, who is considering another run for president, weighed in on Paul’s testy exchange with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie. During a Fox News interview Thursday, Huckabee said the questions posed by Guthrie about the Kentucky senator’s foreign policy positions are fair game.
“When you’re running for president, all is fair in love and war. This is war. This is the big leagues,” Huckabee said. “You’re going to have to expect that you’re going to have a lot of fastballs that are going to be aimed at your nose, and how you handle them is part of the process.”
Paul conceded during a CNN interview Wednesday that he has to do a better job of “holding my tongue and holding my temper” when he’s being questioned on TV.
Huckabee dug deep into the bag of baseball metaphors to make his point that it’s up to the candidate on how he or she handles the situation.*“The pitcher can throw what he wants,” he said. “The question is, can you either put it in the third deck or do you rush the mound and take the pitcher on?”
Huckabee was careful not to directly say whether he believes Paul is “thin skinned.” But the former host of his own Fox News show offered a tip about knowing your audience when being interviewed.
“If you come across as harsh or unwilling to answer the question, the viewer will see that as running away from being forthright,” he said. “If you’re simply making your position clear, they’ll see that as bold.”
