Hurricane Joaquin, a Category 1 storm with*85-mph winds, is forecast to strengthen over the next two days and could track near*the East Coast by this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday.
Forecasters are still divided whether the storm will hit land.
"A wide range of*outcomes is possible, from a direct impact of a major hurricane*along the U.S. East Coast to a track of Joaquin out to sea away from*the coast," the hurricane center said in an online forecast. "It is therefore way too soon to talk about specific*wind, rain*or surge impacts from Joaquin in the U.S.

The hurricane center added: "Confidence in the details of the track forecast late in the*period remains low."
Joaquin (wah-KEEN) is about 190 miles east-northeast of the Bahamas and is*expected to pass over or near the island nation*Wednesday night or early Thursday.*Some parts of the Bahamas could get*more than*a foot of rain, the hurricane center said.
"It could be a significant situation," said Brian Fortier, senior meteorologist at the Weather Channel. "Everyone along the Northeast coast, right up to New England, should keep a close eye on the forecasts."
Already, the hurricane center said that*ocean swells generated by Joaquin will*begin to affect portions*of*Florida's east coast and the Southeast coast by Friday, potentially*causing*life-threatening*surf and rip currents.
Ahead of Joaquin, rain from other weather systems will soak much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday.*Flash flood watches are posted in New York State and New England, the National Weather Service said.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected from from the central Appalachians to New England, where rainfall amounts in excess of 3 inches are possible for some locations, the weather service said.
Flooding was reported Wednesday in southern Maine, where scenes of swamped cars were common, according to WSCH-6 in Portland.
Beyond Wednesday's storms, even more drenching*rain is forecast for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Friday and Saturday, again not directly related to Joaquin. "Several inches of rain*can be expected through Friday and beyond, which will bring concerns of*flash flooding," weather service meteorologist Amanda Fanning said in an online forecast.

Floods likely for East Coast even without Joaquin

The current weather is the result of a complex cocktail of "moving parts," said the Weather Channel's Fortier, including a cold front in the East and low pressure in the South that has already caused heavy rainfall there.
