Iraq announced Tuesday it is renewing efforts to drive the Islamic State from western Anbar province.
Without providing details, authorities said a new operation was being launched with Iraq troops supported by Shiite and Sunni forces. USA TODAY

Iraq's operation to recapture areas under the control of Islamic State extremists faced a setback Wednesday as the group unleashed a wave of suicide attacks targeting the Iraqi army in western Anbar province. At least 17 troops were killed.
Brig. Gen Saad Maan Ibrahim, an Iraqi army spokesman, told The Associated Press the attacks happened near the Islamic State-held city of Fallujah. He said it was unclear how many Islamic State fighters were involved.
The attacks came just hours after the Iraqi government on Tuesday said it would start a campaign to retake parts of Anbar from the Islamic State, also known as ISIL or ISIS.
Earlier this month, the militants captured Ramadi in Iraq and the ancient Syrian town of Palmyra. In the intervening period the United States and Iraq have publicly quarreled over their respective roles in the ongoing conflict.
