The grandson of late oil industry magnate J. Paul Getty was found dead at his home in Hollywood Hills on Tuesday, the family has confirmed.
The death of Andrew Getty, 47, an heir to the Getty oil fortune, was confirmed in a statement from parents Ann and Gordon Getty.
"The family has requested that members of the media and the public respect its privacy during this extremely difficult time," the statement read, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The family said further statements will be released as information becomes available.
Getty had recently taken out a restraining order on a woman, the Los Angeles Times reports that court records show.
Earlier, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed homicide detectives were at the scene of a home where a man was found and that they were investigating, but they would not confirm the identity. Detectives were trying to determine the cause of death, Officer Nuria Vanegas said.
Investigators responded to the home after a woman called 9-1-1 at about 2:20 p.m. PT, Vanegas said. The woman is a witness and not a suspect, according to Vanegas.
TMZ was reporting that the woman is an ex-girlfriend of Getty's and that the woman had a history of domestic violence.
The residence of Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills is among some of the most expensive real estate in the Los Angeles metro area.
Getty is one of four sons of Ann and Gordon Getty, the son of J. Paul Getty.
The family has seen its share of ups and downs. In 1999, Gordon Getty confirmed that he had a separate family that lived in Los Angeles that included a woman and three daughters. In 2011, J. Paul Getty III died in England at the age of 54 after a long illness. As a teen, he'd been taken by kidnappers, who cut off his ear, and he later suffered a debilitating stroke that left him a quadriplegic.
