Sen. Marco Rubio has often*tried to flex his hawkish*foreign policy credentials on the campaign trail by harshly criticizing*how President Obama and former secretary of State Hillary Clinton*have handled global affairs.
Addressing a gathering of American Legion members in New Hampshire Monday, the*Florida Republican had choice words for some of*his GOP rivals as well, saying they "cling to the same plan of weakness and retreat."
Without naming names, Rubio took aim at "isolationist candidates" in his party, seen as a jab at fellow senators Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas. Both have*clashed with Rubio on national security issues and America's role overseas.*Cruz in particular has emerged as a chief rival of Rubio's for the GOP nomination.
Rubio did not mince words Monday:
"On the other side of this election is the party of Reagan, the party of strong national defense and moral clarity, yet we have Republican candidates who propose that rulers like Assad and Putin should be partners of the United States, and who have voted with Barack Obama and Harry Reid rather than with our men and women in uniform. We have isolationist candidates who are apparently more passionate about weakening our military and intelligence capabilities than about destroying our enemies. They talk tough, yet they would strip us of the ability to keep our people safe."Naturally, he also reserved some of his sharpest attacks on Obama, ticking off a litany of what he described as*American foreign policy disasters such *as North Korea, Russia and the Middle East.*He dismissed the president as someone willing to*abandon allies and bow to enemies.
For Rubio, it was some of his harshest criticism leveled yet at Obama:
"It’s now abundantly clear: Barack Obama has deliberately weakened America. He has made an intentional effort to humble us back to size. As if to say: We no longer need to be so powerful because our power has done more harm than good."
