A missing data recorder for the cargo ship El Faro, which sank last year during Hurricane Joaquin, has been found, according to information released Tuesday.
The data recorder was found in 15,000 feet of water near the ship's final resting place on the Atlantic Ocean floor,<span style="color: Red;">*</span>the head of the National Transportation Safety Board told Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., during a Tuesday<span style="color: Red;">*</span>conference call, according to a press release from the senator's office.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Investigators are working to retrieve the recorder.
“This could be a big break for investigators as they try to understand what caused the El Faro to sink," Nelson said in a statement. "The information stored on this device could be the key to determining not only what happened<span style="color: Red;">*</span>but also what can be done to ensure that it never happens again."

El Faro vessel data recorder search to resume
The U.S.-flagged El Faro sank Oct. 1, one day after it left Jacksonville, Fla., bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico. All 33 of the El Faro’s crew, including 28 Americans, died.
The 790-foot ship was located Oct. 31 near the Bahamas, but the data recorder was not with the ship.<span style="color: Red;">*</span>Crews from the NTSB began a second search for the recorder almost two weeks ago.
