More than 500 people were injured at a water park in Taiwan, after a colored powder that was sprayed from a music stage onto party-goers ignited, authorities said Sunday.
Around 1,000 spectators had gathered in front of the stage at the "Color Play Asia" event at the Formosa Water Park, just outside the capital of Taipei on Saturday night, local media reported.
The powder ignited along the ground and mainly burned people's lower bodies, Wang Wei-sheng, a liaison with the New Taipei City fire department command center, told the Associated Press. He said 516 people were reported to have burn injuries by Sunday morning.
Official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that 194 people were seriously injured but no deaths have been reported, according to the New Taipei City health bureau. Taiwan's Central News Agency reported that eight people had life-threatening injuries.

The health department said most of the victims suffered over 50% burns, and inhaled large amounts of black carbon dust, Xinhua reported. The injured have been sent to a number of hospitals.

Lee Lih-jong, deputy chief of the health bureau, told Agence France-Presse: "The reason why the burns were so severe was that in addition to burns to the skin, there were also injuries caused by burns to the respiratory organs from the large amount of color powder inhaled. The next 24 hours will be critical for those severely injured."
The incident is the worst mass injury in New Taipei City's history, Xinhua said.
Taiwan Premier Mao Chih-kuo visited some of the injured people and announced a ban on such parties unless their safety can be assured, AFP reported.
Central News Agency said that police were questioning two park workers who launched the powder as well as the party's on-site organizer and two technicians, according to the AP. They may face charges of professional negligence causing serious injuries and endangering the public.
An investigation into the exact cause of the fire is still underway.
