Days after women who accuse entertainer Bill Cosby of sex assault*questioned an exhibit that will include his work, a much-anticipated Washington museum announced that the presentation would have some reference to the accusations.
"Like all of history, our interpretation of Bill Cosby is a work in progress, something that will continue to evolve as new evidence and insights come to the fore," read a statement released Thursday by Lonnie Bunch, founding director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.
"Visitors will leave the exhibition knowing more about Mr. Cosby's impact on American entertainment, while recognizing that his legacy has been severely damaged by the recent accusations," Bunch said.
The statement from the museum slated to open in September on the National Mall comes as Cosby defends charges in Pennsylvania of three counts of sexual assault. Representatives for the museum could not be reached for elaboration on the exhibit.

Earlier this week, the museum tweeted that there would be 11 inaugural exhibitions and Cosby's work would be included in one of them devoted to theater, film, stage and television. Two items, a comic book and an album cover, are related to Cosby among 150 items featured in that exhibition, according to the museum.
Cosby's accusers could not be reached Thursday. They are among dozens of women who claim they were sexually assaulted*by the actor and comedian in alleged incidents dating back to the 1960s. The allegations escalated in the fall of 2014.
Earlier this week, representatives for Cosby had no comment on the accusers' statements, his lawyers citing ongoing litigation.
