A spokesman from Northern Arizona University confirmed in a statement sent to USA TODAY College that an “error during the deployment” of NAU’s text alert system resulted in “limited distribution of the initial alerts” that a gunman — later identified as freshman*Steven Jones —*opened fire on campus Friday morning, killing one and wounding three.
According to the same statement, the Northern Arizona University Police Department was notified at 1:20 a.m. of shots fired, and Jones was detained at 1:22 a.m. Emergency services were on the scene by 1:33 a.m. to assist the victims. The university would not comment on when the initial alerts went out, but did say that the*alert system sent students a final all-clear message at 2:52 a.m.
It*first updated its website with news of the shooting at 6 a.m.
Some students took to Twitter to express unhappiness with the alert system.
Thanks @NAU for the alert that never came. Glad to know you will let me know the minute I have a payment coming up but not a shooting.
