An endangered northern white rhino named Nola, who lived at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, died on Sunday, leaving only three on the planet, the San Diego Zoo said.
The 41-year-old female, who had been at the park since 1989, was euthanized.
Nola had surgery on Nov. 13 to drain an abscess in her hip that had caused a bacterial infection but her health began to suffer severely about a week ago, Fox News reports.
She had arthritis and other age-related health issues, the zoo said. After her condition worsened the zoo made the decision to put her down, saying "we're absolutely devastated by this loss."

"Thank you for bringing so many people together to help fight for the preservation of your beautiful species," Ashley Dowling wrote on Facebook. She says she saw Nola in May.
Mike Prato Jr. said he saw Nola two weeks ago at the Safari Park, "looking as lovely as ever."

The last three northern white rhinos are at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.
"The future of the species now depends on the success of assisted methods of reproductions as the surviving rhinos are not capable of mating," the conservancy said on Facebook.
