President Obama called former president George H.W. Bush on Thursday to wish him a "speedy recovery" from a fall that injured his neck, the White House said.
"The President extended best wishes on behalf of himself and the First Lady," White House spokesman Eric Schultz said.
Bush remains in fair condition at a hospital in Portland, Maine, after a fall Wednesday that fractured his C2 vertebrae, the former president's office said in a statement.

"President Bush will remain at Maine Medical Center to be fitted for a brace to immobilize the injured area, to continue physical therapy, and for further evaluation," said a statement from his office. "We do not discuss timelines for discharge, but do not believe this will be a prolonged recovery period."
Bush is the father of former president George W. Bush and 2016 Republican presidential candidate and former Florida governor Jeb Bush.
