Ohio Gov. John Kasich heads to New Hampshire next week, fueling the notion that the Republican has a presidential race on his mind.
Kasich will be the headliner at Tuesday’s Politics & Eggs breakfast at Saint Anselm College, where he’s set to talk about Ohio and how he has dealt with budget issues since first taking office in 2011. Then he’ll head to the Politics & Pie gathering that night hosted by the Concord City GOP Committee.
Sounds like the schedule of a White House hopeful, right?
Kasich recently visited South Carolina, home to the first-in-the-South primary, where he discussed his fiscal policies and got a “celebrity-style” welcome, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
When he was a congressman and the GOP’s undisputed expert on the federal budget in 2000, Kasich flirted with the idea of running for president. He wasn’t able to raise enough money, so he dropped out of the race in 1999 and backed George W. Bush.
Today, he’s lurking in the background in the 2016 race and still getting the buzz. For example: conservative columnist George Will, writing in the New Hampshire Union Leader, says Kasich’s “spirit would add spice and his policies would add substance to the Republican presidential contest.”
Kasich told The New York Times, in a story published Thursday, that he hasn’t made up his mind about 2016 and isn’t particularly worried about the head start of Jeb Bush, Scott Walker and presidential hopefuls who are assembling staff and raising money.
“If I decide to do it — I mean, there are time constraints and certain realities — I think I can raise enough money to get out there and get my plane off the aircraft carrier and fly it around,” Kasich is quoted as saying. “There’s plenty of good people to hire, if that’s what you need to do. And if I don’t do it, I like being governor.”
