ROSEBURG, Ore. — The cause of death for the young man responsible for shooting several people at Umpqua Community College this week was ruled a suicide by the Oregon state medical examiner's office, authorities announced Saturday.
"The medical examiner has determined the cause of the death of shooter to be*suicide," said Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin.
However, Hanlin said officials were not prepared to disclose whether the shooter was killed by a bullet fired by his gun or by responding officers' guns.
Federal law enforcement sources have identified the killer as Chris Mercer, who lived in an apartment complex about a mile away.
Local authorities say the gunman — whom they have refused to name publicly to avoid giving him further notoriety — was killed in a shootout with police shortly around 10:30 a.m. local time Thursday.
Authorities said Saturday that the gunman was registered to take classes in the classroom where the shooting occurred.
Police are still looking for any tips, photos or videos from Wednesday's shooting at the school, Hanlin said. In the last few days, authorities have interviewed hundreds of people including victims, witnesses and Mercer's neighbors and have seized evidence including 14 guns.
"We want to ensure we have all the information, all the leads, all the details of this horrific situation gathered," Hanlin said. "Our focus is on the family of the victims and they deserve to know the answers."
Roseburg Police Chief*Jim Burge stressed that officials*are working to ensure that the city is safe. *“There are no current threats against any school or facility in our area," he said.

Meanwhile, a river of grief flowed through this small town Saturday as residents struggled to comprehend the shooting deaths of nine members of a community college at the hands of a young man armed with an arsenal of guns. Officials have opened grief centers to help people cope.
Hanlin remembers driving to the shooting scene at Umpqua Community College just 48 hours ago.
"This isn't real, this can't be real," Hanlin said he remembered thinking. "My heart goes out to the families."
