SEASIDE, Ore. -- A 13-year veteran of the Seaside Police Department was shot and killed in downtown Seaside Friday night, according to officials.
He was identified as Sgt. Jason Gooding, a married father of two school-age children. Gooding graduated from Sherwood High School and Portland State University.
The shooting occurred at about 9:20 p.m.
According to authorities, Gooding and another officer, who was not injured, attempted to serve a felony warrant on Phillip Ferry, 55. Authorities said that Ferry would not show his hands and that the second officer used a Taser*to try and subdue the suspect.
The attempt failed to subdue the suspect who then produced a gun and fired one shot that struck Gooding. The other officer returned fire three times, striking Ferry, who was killed.
"It appears the the shooting of Mr. Ferry was justified," said Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis.
The street was closed overnight while authorities investigated but has since reopened.
Witnesses told KGW that the suspect appeared to be under the influence of some substance and was yelling unknown statements at the time. Marquis said authorities know of at least one witness to the incident who they urged to come forward.
