Penn State’s chapter of the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity has been*suspended for the remainder of this semester after allegations surfaced that members posted photos of nude women to two private Facebook pages.
Joseph Rosenberg, executive director of the Kappa Delta Rho National Fraternity, said upon learning from officials at Penn State that the chapter had been placed on full suspension, the national leadership immediately examined facts available and decided to place the chapter on suspension for the remainder of this semester. In an e-mail, Rosenberg said the national leadership is conducting a full membership review and reorganization, and has informed Penn State of these actions.
A former member of the university’s chapter informed police about two private, invite-only Facebook pages allegedly operated by members of the fraternity, and provided photos, texts and posts on the pages as evidence, according to the State College Police Department’s affidavit of probable cause.
According to the affidavit, the pages included evidence of hazing, photos of unsuspecting women who were “passed out and nude or in other sexual or embarrassing positions” and drug sales that included marijuana, edibles, concentrates, ADD medication and some cocaine.
The fraternity’s original Facebook page “Covert Business Transactions” was shut down when a woman threatened the fraternity after she saw a topless photo of herself on the page. The female observed the photo when a member accidentally left his Facebook account logged in while she was visiting the fraternity, according to the affidavit. The new page named “2.0” started approximately 8 months ago, shortly after “Covert Business Transactions” was shut down, and had 144 active members including current students and graduates, according to the affidavit.
Rosenberg said the national fraternity will cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies and the university’s investigation and disciplinary process. Upon the completion of that investigation, it will evaluate the further findings and make a decision regarding the Penn State chapter that is appropriate for all parties, he said.
“The national leadership of Kappa Delta Rho is committed to hold our brothers accountable for their actions,” Rosenberg said. “We embrace the principle of respect for all persons and we will adhere to that principle in this matter.”
