A manhunt that swept across California after five bodies were found in a Modesto home appeared to conclude Sunday when police in San Jose located a "person of interest" in the deaths.
"Martin Martinez has been located by @SanJosePD. The investigation in ongoing. No further details available," Modesto police tweeted early Sunday.
Police spokeswoman Heather Graves told News10 in Modesto that police received a call from a concerned family member Saturday afternoon asking that officers check on the home. When police investigated, they found the bodies of three children and two adults inside the home.
Police did not immediately reveal how the victims died.
Shortly after the bodies were discovered, Martin Martinez was identified as a person of interest, kicking off a statewide search for his 2000 Red Lincoln Navigator. Graves said the relationship between Martinez, 30, and the victims was not immediately available.
Modesto, a city of more than 300,000 in Central California, is about 90 miles from San Jose. The crime scene was a home in a relatively new subdivision where large homes tower over young trees.
Connie Lycan, 59, told The Modesto Beeshe has lived in the neighborhood since it was built less than 10 years ago.
"We came here because it is quiet," she said. "Well it was quiet. No place is safe anymore."
Aruna Rao, 47, said the tragedy was a shock for the tightly knit community.
"It's a community where most people know each other," Rao told the Bee. "It's really scary something like this happening."
