Donald Trump continues to hold a big lead in New Hampshire, but a new poll released Monday has a new second-place candidate: Ben Carson.
Trump has the backing of 28% of likely Republican voters, followed by Carson at 17%, according to the*latest Monmouth University Poll.
Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, gained 12 percentage*points from a similar survey in late July.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich, in third place at 11%, is the only other Republican in double digits.
“These findings come at a time when Republican voters express deep dissatisfaction with the party’s national leadership,” Monmouth reported.
That presumably includes establishment figures like former Florida governor*Jeb Bush, who lost 5*points since the Monmouth Poll and is now tied for fifth.
The one-two finish of Trump and Carson mirrors other Republican polls across the country.
Trump, Carson and Kasich are followed by:*Ted Cruz (8%), Carly Fiorina (7%), Bush (7%), Rand Paul (4%) and Marco Rubio (4%).
“Scott Walker and Chris Christie each earn 2%, and none of the other six candidates tested registered more than 1%,” Monmouth reported.
The polls could shift after the Republican candidates gather Wednesday in California for the second debate of the 2016 election cycle.
