NEW YORK — Pope Francis said Friday that grief remains palpable at the site where nearly 3,000 were killed in terrorist attacks 14 years ago at the World Trade Center.
"This is a place where we cry … for the powerlessness we feel when we see injustice, the inability to solve our differences, to dialogue," Francis said, addressing an interfaith prayer service at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
The pope also stopped at one of the memorial's two outdoor reflecting pools, which trace the footprints of the Twin Towers destroyed by hijacked planes, and said a silent prayer with about 1,000 invited guests. Most were survivors of the attack, relatives of those who were killed or emergency responders.
Francis, who has devoted much of his papacy to calling for peace, joined an interfaith prayer service at the lowest level of the subterranean 9/11 Museum. He shook hands with leaders of the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and other religions on the stage of the memorial's foundation hall.

Pope Francis in America
In prayer, the pontiff recalled the 2001 terrorist attacks. "We are mindful of those who suffered death injury and loss on the same day," he said. Francis said he felt "many different emotions standing here'' – above all grief.
In a remark some relatives of 9/11 victims may disagree with, the pope attributed "the wrongful and senseless loss of innocent lives'' at Ground Zero to "the inability to find solutions which respect the common good.'' Many 9/11 families believe the terrorists' determination to attack the United States would have trumped any solutions proposed for any problems.

Francis also spoke of the 343 emergency workers who died at the site after rushing into the Twin Towers to rescue people even though they knew it meant almost certain death.
Francis called for peace in families, schools communities and "all the places in which war seems endless," and asked for a moment of silent prayer.
"It is possible to live in a world of peace," he said, referring to "this great city" of New York, and the gathering before him as proof. "It is possible to live together with our different paths, different cultures, different religions."
The service was followed by a moving rendition of the song Let There Be Peace on Earth by the Young People's Chorus of New York City, a multi-ethnic group who held hands as they sang. The service was attended by about 500 people of different faiths. Reflections were offered by Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and other religious leaders.
After the service, Francis visited relics on display at the museum site — a Bible found in the rubble of the Twin Towers and a cross formed out of twisted building girders that fell amid the wreckage of the north tower.

Where is Pope Francis? A schedule of his U.S. visit
As he has in other stops on his U.S. trip, Francis stressed the importance of tolerance: "We can and must build unity on the basis of our diversity of languages, cultures and religions. ... we are called to say 'no' to every attempt to impose uniformity and 'yes' to a diversity accepted and reconciled.''
Earlier, Francis spoke personally with 10 families who lost relatives in the attack. The relatives were introduced to him by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, chairman of the foundation that built the memorial and museum.

Among those gathered was Frank Silecchia, the construction worker who discovered the 9/11 cross, one of the most famous pieces of wreckage recovered from the site.
On Sept. 11, 2001, Silecchia raced to the scene and joined the rescue and recovery effort. One dawn, just after he'd helped pull three bodies from the rubble, he saw it — a 17-foot-high cross-section of steel I-beams that had plummeted into the shell of an office building next to the north tower two days earlier.
In the weeks and years that followed, Silecchia fought to protect and preserve the cross, which had to be moved to make way for construction. "I've waited a long time for this day,'' he said. "Now the pope will bless the cross.''
Silecchia's many health problems, some of which he traces to his work at Ground Zero 14 years ago, have confined him to a wheelchair. Nonetheless, he was jubilant: "I couldn't go to the pope, so the pope came to me!''
The controversial artifact evokes an issue close to Francis' heart — the role of faith in the public square. Before the museum opened, a group that advocates separation of church and state sued to stop the cross from being displayed. But several courts ruled that its historic importance as a symbol of hope in the weeks after the attack outweighed its religious content.

Pope Francis to celebrate Mass at Madison Square Garden
Nixia Mena-Alexis came to the 9/11 Memorial on Friday with a bouquet of yellow roses in memory of her sister Diarelia who was killed in the attacks. Diarelia Mena, 30, was a computer programmer for the Cantor-Fitzgerald firm who worked on the 104th floor of the north tower of the World Trade Center.
"I feel blessed to have the opportunity to be here to see the pope bless this place where so many people lost their lives. He's a man of peace," Mena-Alexis said. The spot is now even more sacred because of Francis' blessing, she said, but Mena-Alexis was also sad "because this is where I lost my sister.''
A candle was on display next to the south pool, a reminder of the last papal visit to what was then known as Ground Zero. In 2008, Francis' predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, lit a single candle at the bedrock of the construction site that has turned into a new World Trade Center. It includes the nation's tallest building, One World Trade Center, which opened for business last year.
But the single candle was not lit, in keeping with 9/11 Memorial rules against them.
